Why We Love It

  • Occupies a 1906 building that originally opened as a bank
  • Historic touches speckle the lobby from towering marble columns to the original vault door
  • Attached to the Minneapolis Skyway network, for traversing the city in cold weather
  • A few blocks from the shops and restaurants that cluster along Nicollet Mall

The bank that erected The Hotel Minneapolis’ building a century ago filled its main floor with towering ceilings propped up by marble Doric columns. It’s an impressive entrance, one that was preserved when the historic structure was reopened as the hotel a few years ago under Marriott's exclusive Autograph Collection.

The hotel's spacious rooms are embellished with upscale fixtures like a pillow-top bed, rainfall shower, granite counters in the bathroom and plush robes. Breakfast is served in Restaurant Max, with potted palms, tall windows, and marble and brass touches. A wine cellar takes up the former bank vault, preserving the hefty vault door with its labyrinth of dials and cogs.

To combat the seasonal chill that moves over the region, the city of Minneapolis built an extensive network of enclosed Skyway bridges. The hotel has a direct connection, meaning guests can take a scenic, slightly elevated stroll through the city toward top spots like the Target Center, to catch Timberwolves games, or Target Field, home of the Twins.

Only two blocks west of the hotel runs Nicollet Mall, a pedestrianized street that heads southwest through downtown past major department stores and other shops and restaurants. For serious spending, walk two blocks southeast to the Government Plaza Light Rail Station, where arriving trains terminate south of the city at the Mall of America. A cluster of performing arts venues also speckle through downtown, less than a mile from the hotel.

Enjoyed Most: Breakfast was good
Other Comments: Carpet in the room was wet. There was garbage in the bathroom. Didn't explain free WiFi at checkin. Room was too expensive for what you got.

Enjoyed Most: Grand elegance. Breakfast buffet was wonderful.
Other Comments: If you can't afford someone to drive you there, parking greatly reduces the quality of the experience. Hotel has no parking except valet for $35 overnight. Garage across the street advertises $5 weekend rate, but charges you $10. Automated attendant. "HELP" Call button reaches security company operator who can/will do nothing to help. Shakedown. I hate places that lie about pricing. For $5 it's unlikely I'll ever be back. Funny how that works, isn't it?

Enjoyed Most: The location is perfect especially for our weekend which included a concert at TCF Bank Stadium and a Twins game at target field. Just a 10 minute walk to target field and close enough to the train station to get anywhere else. Nice-looking lobby and the attached restaurant was convenient. Room was a decent size, though our view was very poor. The travel zoo price was the biggest positive.
Other Comments: The check-in process was Ridiculously slow. Had to wait in line forever, and even though they had 3 people checking in, the computers were working very slowly. One guest was having a problem, and it took forever to fix it, so others got to wait. I think there were many angry guests in the check-in line. The rooms were not ready (cleaned) when we finally got to check-in.. Had to check our bags and get our room key after our concert. They did take our luggage to our room however and there was no delay later that evening.

Enjoyed Most: Staff was especially positive, cordial and welcoming on this stay. I have been there before and while service was always good it seemed to have a "little extra" care this stay.
Other Comments: Front dest and restaurant staff were extraordinarily helpful without being imposing

Enjoyed Most: The history of the hotel -- it used to be a bank -- was so present in the lobby and the breakfast service was really fantastic. Staff went out of their way to accommodate us.
