The Quayside Hotel was formerly a group of six fishermen's cottages dating back to the 18th century, overlooking Brixham Harbour and Torbay. It is an ideal base for exploring South Devon, known as the English Riviera, "so-called for its mild climate, long sandy beaches, and prevalence of palm trees", says the World Travel Guide.

Nearby are the picturesque naval town of Dartmouth, the seaside resort town of Torbay and Agatha Christie's riverside holiday home (Greenway). You'll be staying a 3-minute walk from Brixham town centre – described by The Guardian as "beautiful all year round" and home to "Devon's finest seafood".

Make sure you visit one of the many art galleries, the Golden Hind replica of explorer Sir Francis Drake's ship, and Berry Head nature reserve, which connects visitors to the Coast Path and some 22 miles of trails. Goodrington Sands Beach, Paignton Beach and Paignton Zoo are all within a 15-minute drive away.

Back at the hotel, the AA-Rosette Quayside Restaurant showcases fresh local produce including fish caught in the harbour -- red mullet, sea bass, pollock and wild salmon, as well as Elberry Cove mussels and River Dart oysters have all been on the menu. Afterwards, have a nightcap in the local favourite Ernie Lister Pub, which has regular live entertainment.

The hotel's bedrooms are all uniquely decorated with a seaside theme and work from Brixham artists and photographers. Upgrade to a Luxury Sea View Double Room, for more of those views -- you can choose between balconies or a bay window seat and a 4-poster or a king-size bed.

really good deal with travelzoo. good value for money. convenient position and free parking.

do think that the side dishes are really expensive. £3.00 for peas, and only a small dishful. etc. potato gratin was £3.50 for not much more than a mouthful.

Quirky building full of character (and stairs!). Very good restaurant, excellent service, all staff very friendly and interested in your trip. Great breakfast choices including kippers and smoked haddock. Great views, in my opinion it's worth upgrading your room to get a harbour view. Parking a short way away but much appreciated. Good walks (try Berry Head and its cafe), bus 17 to Kingswear for ferry to Dartmouth, steam trains nearby, if you like pubs try The Manor and the Queens Arms - a great little break.

The only downside for us was the room was so hot it was difficult to sleep. Even with windows wide open. However we still loved it and would definitely return.
