The Quayside Hotel was formerly a group of six fishermen's cottages dating back to the 18th century, overlooking Brixham Harbour and Torbay. It is an ideal base for exploring South Devon, known as the English Riviera, "so-called for its mild climate, long sandy beaches, and prevalence of palm trees", says the World Travel Guide.

Nearby are the picturesque naval town of Dartmouth, the seaside resort town of Torbay and Agatha Christie's riverside holiday home (Greenway). You'll be staying a 3-minute walk from Brixham town centre – described by The Guardian as "beautiful all year round" and home to "Devon's finest seafood".

Make sure you visit one of the many art galleries, the Golden Hind replica of explorer Sir Francis Drake's ship, and Berry Head nature reserve, which connects visitors to the Coast Path and some 22 miles of trails. Goodrington Sands Beach, Paignton Beach and Paignton Zoo are all within a 15-minute drive away.

Back at the hotel, the AA-Rosette Quayside Restaurant showcases fresh local produce including fish caught in the harbour -- red mullet, sea bass, pollock and wild salmon, as well as Elberry Cove mussels and River Dart oysters have all been on the menu. Afterwards, have a nightcap in the local favourite Ernie Lister Pub, which has regular live entertainment.

The hotel's bedrooms are all uniquely decorated with a seaside theme and work from Brixham artists and photographers. Upgrade to a Luxury Sea View Double Room, for more of those views -- you can choose between balconies or a bay window seat and a 4-poster or a king-size bed.

Enjoyed Most: Enjoyed everything! There was nothing that we could possibly complain about! We had been a little anxious as there were no double rooms left when we booked but when we got to our room they had been pushed together giving us a huge bed - that small gesture was one of the many things we really loved about the Quayside hotel! Some of the rooms looked as if they had been updated, ours wasn't one that had received the update but that simply added to the quirkiness and quaintness that you'd expect from a seaside hotel. The views from rooms on the front I imagine are spectacular - they certainly are from outside the hotel and inside the restaurant and bar. Our room was an inland view and on the very top floor (room 42). The rabbit warren of cute little corridors and random steps up an down made us feel like we were on adventure and although we didn't have a view we did share a roof terrace area with room 41! Food, drink choices and service in both the restaurant and bar were excellent!
Other Comments: We will definitely return!

Other Comments: Disappointed about the food. I expected lots of fish dishes but only two very ordinary items available daily. My prawn cocktail starter was just a few frozen prawns/shrimps on uncut lettuce in an old fashioned cocktail glass - no imagination! Staff very pleasant but on the first day we were made to feel like inferior guests in the dining room when the waiter announced in a loud voice that Travelzoo guests were only entitled to certain menu items unless paying a supplement.
