Threadneedles is a 5-star hotel in a former bank building dating back to the 1850s, and is in the heart of The City, London's financial centre. The old banking hall has been converted into a lobby and has a striking stained-glass domed ceiling that "really sets the scene", according to Fodor's.

This "luxury hotel" is "peaceful" at the weekends once the commuters have gone, according to The Daily Telegraph. The Royal Exchange (open Monday-Friday and home to many luxury-brand stores and restaurants) is less than five minutes' walk away.

Other nearby attractions include St Paul's Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Tate Modern and the Tower of London, all of which are within a 15-minute walk. The Bank of England and Mansion House, home and office of the Lord Mayor of London, are just at the end of Threadneedle Street.

The on-site Marco Pierre White Wheeler's Oyster Bar & Grill Room has an ornate ceiling, grand chandeliers, burgundy leather seating and tall Victorian windows. You can expect to see classic British dishes such as roasted cod and grilled pork on the menu. However, the restaurant is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Afternoon tea, served in the lounge, has a menu inspired by some of history's greatest Britons, including Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. Champagne and freshly shucked oysters are available from the Oyster Bar, which was the old banking counter.

Time Out describes the bedrooms as "individual" and "soothing examples of City-boy chic". Deluxe Rooms vary in size and shape -- some are open-plan and others more cosy. Executive Rooms, formerly the bank's senior executive offices, are large, and some have floor-to-ceiling windows, mahogany doors and marble fireplaces.

Enjoyed Most: Public areas very nice.
Other Comments: Failed to deliver drink extras, 'executive' room was bland and had no character, also it only had a shower. Staff were a bit unwelcoming, bar and restaurant seemed to be off limits due to a wedding.
