The second you enter the Mendocino Hotel's mahogany-filled lobby -- complete with a crackling fireplace, stained glass windows and a number of antiques -- you are transported to a different era. The building was constructed in 1878 and dates back to a time when Mendocino was a happening port for the logging trade. The hotel is right by the ocean, a half-mile from State Route 1 and a mile from Mendocino Headlands State Park and Mendocino Bay.

The European rooms (this room type is not offered in our deal) are quite small and have an in-room vanity and sink and shared restrooms across the hall. The garden suites are much more spacious. Many of these rooms also have a foldout sofa, fireplace and porch. These rooms were renovated back in 2006 and feature views of the lush greenery outside. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the bedrooms.

There are three restaurants on property to choose from, whether you feel like something more casual (Garden Room or Lobby Bar) or a finer dining experience (Mendocino Hotel Restaurant). The hotel is right in town too, so there are plenty of dining options and shops within walking distance.

From the press:
  • "It's easy to see why artists were -- and still are -- attracted to this idyllic community, a cluster of New England-style captains' homes and stores on headlands overlooking the ocean" -- Frommer's

Enjoyed Most: The location was terrific. The room was large, clean and surrounded by lovely gardens. I had a wonderful dinner of fish and chips in their bar area.
Other Comments: Be aware that I loved my room and bed but I prefer hard beds so this suited my tastes perfectly.

Enjoyed Most: The historic flavor of the Hotel and the location right down in the village. The front desk staff was delightful. Our room had a fireplace which just added to the ambiance.
Other Comments: Dining room-integrity is an issue! I ordered calamari (which was thickly over battered) and the plate had 7 battered onion rings mixed in. I told the waitress and she said that" the chef sometimes does that". I told her that it was wrong as I did not order onion rings. -It was not corrected. So-Warning** if you order something that is battered or chopped up, the chef "may" substitute with a cheaper product. We did not go back to the dining area the rest of our stay.

Enjoyed Most: The location was right in the middle of town. The room had a Victorian Era flair in its furnishing and environment complete with a fireplace. The bathroom was upgraded with modern amenities and double sinks. The food in the hotel restaurant was good.
