As with most Scandinavian cities, Helsinki has a reputation for being on the pricey side. Helka Hotel is a good-value option within easy striking distance of what this harbourside city has to offer.
You'll be staying five minutes' walk from Kampii metro station and shopping centre, one stop from Helsinki's central railway station (Helsingin Rautatieasema). Ateneum art museum is a 15-minute walk and it's a 10-minute drive to Linnanmäki amusement park, the Olympic Stadium (where the tower has far-reaching views across the Baltic), and the Market Square. From there, you can catch the 15-minute ferry to Suomenlinna (the Fortress of Finland), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The hotel is owned by the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) of Finland and all profits go towards supporting their work with women in crisis. The building itself dates back to the 1920s, but inside it's modern, bright and filled with Finnish-style furniture and art.
The price includes a Scandinavian breakfast buffet. In the evening, the restaurant serves Finnish fare that is tasty but on the pricey side. Expect dishes such as Finnish tapas (pickled vegetables, salmon tartar with sour cream, grilled lamb sausage), salmon soup and sirloin of reindeer. The bar serves beer from local microbreweries and has live music every week.
The standard bedrooms are on the small side but all have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and a kettle. Upgrade to a premium room for more space and late checkout at 2pm, or the suites have their own private saunas and a separate living area. On the sixth floor, there is also a traditional Finnish sauna that is free for all guests to use.
Note that you need to let reception know if you will arrive after 6pm. The hotel will re-sell non-guaranteed rooms after this time.
