"One of the city's most appealing small hotels," says Time Out about Hotel Rex, a literary-themed boutique property in the heart of San Francisco. Just two blocks from Union Square, the hotel occupies a restored historic building and evokes the atmosphere of the city’s colorful literary salons of the 1920s and '30s. Its period charm, central location and thoughtful extras make it a great value find.

With leather club chairs, a crackling fireplace and bookshelf-lined walls, old-world ambiance is established in the lobby lounge and stretches through the property (even the study has typewriters and vintage photographs). Don’t miss the regular readings, lectures and jazz and movie nights. There’s also a free nightly wine hour (5-6pm) and coffee in the mornings.

Rooms carry on in a similar theme, embellished with the work of local artists and whimsical hand-painted lamps. Despite the hotel's historic pretensions, fittings are surprisingly up-to-date with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and plush pillow-top beds. Rooms are on the small side (largely due to the building’s original structure) and those facing the shady courtyard to the rear can be a little dark, though quieter than those overlooking the street. Pets are welcome at no extra charge.

Upon checking in, we were not offered our Travelzoo $20 food/beverage credit. So when I asked about it, the person at the front desk proceeded to go on about how the "hotel has not offered that deal for over two years." I offered to show him my Travelzoo confirmation, but he said no, he had seen it and he couldn't understand why Travelzoo kept offering this when the hotel didn't support it any longer. Then he was "searching around for something he could give me to use for the credit.... But never really have me anything. All the while, he must have mentioned at least for more times that they hadn't offered something like that in years and that he would have to talk to the food/manager about it. I asked if we could just eat/drink at the restaurant, but it on our room and have the $20 credit applied to our bill when we checked out.... He huffed and puffed and said no, that there wasn't really any way for him to do that. All in all, we never received this perk and was given our customer service in the meantime regarding it.

They didn't want to honor the $20 food and beverage credit saying that the promotion expired over 3 years ago. Only until speaking with three different people did they honor it. Complimentary coffee was served and I was then charged for it along with the menu prices being different. I told them at the front desk upon checkout and they wouldn't change my bill. I'm contacting my credit card company and disputing the entire stay.

Lovely bar /sitting room.Perfect location. Some of the concierge staff had great restaurant recommendations.Very nice guests who we enjoyed chatting with.Nice to have the free glass of wine at end of day..Unfortunately it was day one for kitchen chef at breakfast so may of us had to abandon breakfast as it was taking so long.

We paid a lot more than ther guests staying. No upgrade and literally had to beg for a slightly bigger room .We were reluctantly given a room with two double beds and we're grateful for the extra space and a window that opened to a barb wired alleyway with some light and air circulation which was preferable to a cement wall boxed in feeling in first room offered. We later heard from other guest who are earlier than us that they had been upgraded when they paid the desk clerk $15. Sleazy. We were told that there was no such thing as a $20 voucher to spend per day and I had to drag out my computer to show this was part of the price. They denied any knowledge of this but reluctantly agreed to allow us to use it at the bar.On a positive the barren Tony was delightful and Di not even expect a tip.
