The Lambert Arms is an 18th-century coaching inn in the village of Aston Rowant near the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Natural Beauty on the borders of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The inn has 4 AA Gold Stars, which are awarded to properties offering excellent levels of quality, hospitality and service. It also has an AA Rosette and a Breakfast award.

We visited The Lambert Arms and loved the homely atmosphere, with wooden floors, leather armchairs and decorative rugs. It's cosy in the winter thanks to its open fireplaces and also great on a hot summer's day out in the courtyard. The restaurant serves British à la carte dishes, and snacks and afternoon tea are available from the bar.

The Double Inn Rooms are in the main building, and Courtyard Rooms are in the Courtyard Wing. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and Freeview.

Oxford, The Roald Dahl Museum, Blenheim Palace (Sir Winston Churchill's birthplace) and Waddesdon Manor are within a 40-minute drive. Other area highlights include outlet shopping centre Bicester Village, Vale Brewery and the market town of Thame, which is a 12-minute drive from The Lambert Arms. The Oxfordshire County & Thame Show takes place on 17 September, and features horse show jumping, chariot racing, falconry displays and a food theatre with tastings of local produce.

Travelzoo tip: Rather than driving into Oxford and paying city parking fees, catch the Oxford Tube bus from Lewknor, which is a 15-minute walk from The Lambert Arms.

Enjoyed Most: Beautifully maintained with large airy rooms. Excellent breakfast.
Other Comments: The manager was extremely helpful in managing to get subtitles on our television as we are extremely deaf and the subtitles are not automatic.

Enjoyed Most: The location. Lovely clean room and quirky sitting room.
Other Comments: Problem accessing the menu for dinner in the evening. We just gave up the second night. Food on the first night was good.

Enjoyed Most: Thoroughly enjoyable. Air conditioned rooms. Food delicious. Easy to find and a great location.

Other Comments: Rather noisy. We could hear a man snoring immediately below us, and there were builders and other workers making noise both late into the night (moving beer barrels? 11pm) and early (erecting scaffolding 8am). Though the weather was exceptionally hot we learned to keep the windows closed on the second night. The proximity of the Oxford tube stop was a real bonus and not sufficiently advertised, we thought. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, especially those on reception. Thank you.
