"One of the best examples of Romantic Revival architecture in Portugal" (Frommer's), the stately Pestana Palace Hotel is one of the most opulent grande dames on the Lisbon hotel scene. Classified as a National Monument, the restored property is a fairytale palace. It's located in the quiet residential district of Santo Amaro-Ajuda and is surrounded by lush gardens, meandering paths and tropical birds.
Overlooking the Tagus River, the hotel is just about within walking distance of the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery in historic Belém, but other key sights aren't as close. The plus side of being fairly secluded means there's every excuse to laze by the free-form outdoor pool or indulge in a treatment at the expansive spa and health club, where there's a gym, sauna and indoor pool.
The fine-dining Valle Flôr restaurant is lavish, with Rococo frills and Romantic ceiling art. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves traditional dishes, such as bacalhau (salted cod stew - it tastes much better than it sounds!) and wild partridge. During warmer months be sure to get a table out on the terrace overlooking the pool. Post-dinner, retire to one of the formal lobbies for a glass of port.
Rooms are mainly situated in the newer wings and, after the opulence of the formal public rooms, they can feel a little subdued. They are, however, well equipped with modern comforts and are furnished in a classic style, with carpeted floors, pretty table lamps and little balconies or terraces facing the gardens. High-end suites (including the one where Madonna stays when she's in town) are in the main palace and are much more decadent.
