Set in what used to be a 15th-century monastery (which then became an 18th-century palace), this Intercontinental Hotel Palacio des Cardosas, in Porto’s Old Town, is an ode to opulence and style, featuring marble floors, pillars, and crystal chandeliers. It’s no wonder Fodor’s named it one of its 100 best hotels in the World..
Overlooking Porto’s central Avenida dos Aliados, this is a great location if you’re looking to get a feel for Porto’s history. It’s right next to Clérigos Church and Sao Bento station, where the story of this UNESCO World Heritage city is depicted in dramatic blue-and-white tiles. Colourful Ribeira Square, on the banks of the Rio Douro is a 13-minute walk away.
Astoria, the on-site fine-dining restaurant, specialises in Portuguese cuisine with a contemporary twist and Douro valley wines, and has great views over Liberdade Square. Its terrace is a picturesque spot for an aperitif, while the bar serves cocktails, a wide range of Port wines (of course) and afternoon tea. A spa with a dry sauna offers luxurious face and body treatments (charges apply), and there’s a 24 hour fitness centre.
The 105 elegant rooms and suites are spacious, and feature classic décor with marble en-suite bathrooms and views over the city. All have free WiFi, cable TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a minibar. Upgraded rooms add sofabeds, while duplex suites (including two Presidential Suites), offer a separate seating area, two bathrooms and a small private balcony.
