The BEST WESTERN Ambleside Salutation Hotel is in a 17th-century building in the centre of Ambleside, in the heart of the Lake District National Park.
Ambleside is a great base for walkers. There are two routes to Grasmere (famous for its Wordsworth connections). Both routes take 90 minutes to two hours, with the Coffin Route taking you past Wordsworth's former home, Dove Cottage. The beautiful Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is only 15 minutes' walk from the centre of the village (you do have to climb quite a steep hill, though).
The hotel's spa features a gym, an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room, plus an outdoor Jacuzzi. Available treatments range from full-body massages to pedicures (supplements apply).
Full Cumbrian breakfast is served daily from 8-10am and is included in some rates. For lunch and dinner, the informal Brasserie restaurant offers a 3-course menu made with local ingredients. There's also a lounge bar with cosy fires and local ale. Parking is free.
Rooms have contemporary décor. All have flat-screen TVs with cable channels and free Wi-Fi. Many have views of the village, while upgraded rooms have iPod docks and special features such as private balconies or hot tubs.
