With a mid-century modern vibe full of fun amenities and high-tech perks, The James is as cool as it looks and certainly earns its spot on Travel + Leisure's list of the Best Hotels in Chicago. Despite being super chic, the hotel is also surprisingly family-friendly -- kids are supplied with a welcome kit and milk and cookies at turndown.

Guest rooms are bright, surprisingly spacious and a minimalist’s dream, decorated in white and wood-grain accents. Clever room layouts ensure bathrooms are large, and all rooms were just upgraded with the KEYPR in-room concierge tablet system -- you can arrange a wake-up call, order ice or more towels just by tapping the touch-screen (currently, The James is the only hotel in Chicago with this feature).

Many rooms also have cozy dining nooks with a sofa and a table. Our favorite are the family-friendly suites, with a separate media corner featuring a DVD player and projector TV to entertain the kids. Rooms include electric kettles with Starbucks Via coffee as well as pantries featuring snacks and a variety of drink options. This part of the city can get noisy, but rooms facing the interior courtyard get a quieter stay.

The on-site Primehouse restaurant is a modern steakhouse regularly named among the best in the city -- no small feat in a steak-happy city like Chicago. There's also a Primehouse Bar & Patio for drinks and outdoor dining, and the hotel also has an expansive 24-hour fitness center and a full-service spa which includes an aromatherapy foot bath with each service.

Surrounding the hotel are the countless shops, restaurants and bars of River North -- Lawry's The Prime Rib is just across the street, the expansive Eataly complex is a block away and the Magnificent Mile is just as close. Wi-Fi access is free, there's a car service that can take you around the Loop and River North and pets are welcome (though an extra charge does apply). You can even arrange for in-room bartender service with mixology lessons on request.
