Set right in the heart of the city center, Albus Hotel Amsterdam is a smart base for a city break, within walking distance of the sights. The hotel has a hip design, and service is polite and well informed.
Set within the canal belt, the property is a 20-minute walk from the Anne Frank House and Museumplein, where you’ll find the Rijksmuseum (visit in the afternoon for smaller crowds), the Stedelijk Museum of contemporary and modern art and the Van Gogh Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of the artist’s work. Cafés, bars and clubs on Rembrandtplein are one block away and can be reached within five minutes on foot. From here, three tram routes (4, 9 and 14) provide easy access to the rest of the city and Centraal train station.
The hotel is small, but well equipped. Free fair-trade coffee, tea, lemonade and water are laid out in the lounge. The hotel’s Senses Restaurant serves elegantly presented three- to six-course set menus at lunch and dinner, with wine pairings available. Breakfast is a buffet, with a choice of cereal, fruit, pastries, cheeses and hot dishes. There is limited seating in the dining room and there can be lines at peak times.
Bedrooms are comfy, with modern furnishings and mood lighting. Entry-level rooms are on the small side; higher categories are larger and Studios have fully equipped kitchens. Wi-Fi is free and all rooms are supplied with free bottled water and a Nespresso machine. The hotel is on Vijzelgracht, one of Amsterdam’s main streets, and front-facing rooms can be noisy. Earplugs are provided; rooms to the rear are quieter.
