Set in 18 acres of quiet grounds, Overwater Hall is a Grade II-listed Georgian manor with castellated turrets, a columned portico, and a warm welcome, all in the shadow of Skiddaw mountain.
Just 10 minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite and 20 minutes from the market town of Keswick, the hotel is an ideal base for walking. There's plenty of wildlife to be seen in the grounds -- look out for nesting ospreys (April-August) -- and red squirrels venture all the way up to the house.
Dinner is served every evening from 7pm (last orders at 8.30pm) and the menu changes regularly -- expect the likes of duck with butternut squash or trio of lamb with root vegetables. After dinner, retire to the drawing room for chocolate and coffee on the sofa. There are games and books for guests, and a log fire during winter months. There's also a cosy mahogany-panelled bar.
Dogs are made to feel genuinely at home here, and are permitted in the grounds, bar and one of the lounges -- there's no extra charge and the hotel also offers a dog-sitting service.
The 11 bedrooms have country-style décor and fluffy bathrobes -- all have baths and separate showers. All rooms are supplied with fresh fruit and flowers, and there's also fresh milk for tea and coffee. The hotel is completely off the beaten track -- as a result, there's no phone signal and the free Wi-Fi can be patchy at times.
