Dating back to 1793, the Newby Bridge Hotel was one of the first mansions built on the shores of Lake Windermere. It sits on the lake's southernmost tip, in landscaped gardens overlooking the water -- a classic 18th-century scene, complete with replica Grecian temple.

The property is about a mile from several local attractions: the Lakes Aquarium, Lakeland Motor Museum and Fell Foot Park, a National Trust Victorian country park. Bowness-on-Windermere -- the area's hub for outdoor activities, and home to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction -- is just 20 minutes' drive away. Cartmel, a picturesque village with a racecourse, is 15 minutes from the hotel.

The recently refurbished Garden View Restaurant features a daily-changing menu using local produce -- much of it from the hotel’s own kitchen garden -- while the Huntsman's bar has log fires for chilly evenings. There's also an indoor pool, a steam room, a small gym and a spa pool, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi in public areas. Dogs are welcome (for a small extra charge).

There are 46 bedrooms at the property, including five with 4-poster beds -- all are ensuite and have televisions and hospitality trays. For the ultimate in hi-tech luxury, couples can stay in the elegant Grecian temple (the Rotunda). Here, you'll find remote-controlled lighting, a TV that descends from the ceiling, discreet speakers and an iPod docking station. Back in the main building there are disabled-access rooms on the ground floor, one with a roll-in shower.

Enjoyed Most: Staff were very considerate and helpful. Room was good with shower and bath.
Other Comments: The only criticism was the slowness in serving meals -it was 50 minutes before we received our starter and over an hour before our main appeared. The afternoon tea was also problematic - it took over an hour to produce the scones!
