Dating back to 1793, the Newby Bridge Hotel was one of the first mansions built on the shores of Lake Windermere. It sits in landscaped gardens overlooking the water at the lake's southernmost tip. The classic 18th-century scene is completed by a replica Greek temple.

The property is about a mile from several local attractions: the Lakes Aquarium, Lakeland Motor Museum and Fell Foot Park, a Victorian country park that was formerly the grounds of a country house but is now armed by the National Trust. Bowness-on-Windermere -- a hub for outdoor activities, and home to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction -- is 20 minutes' drive away. Cartmel, a picturesque village with a racecourse and a priory that dates from the 12th century, is 15 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The Garden View Restaurant features a daily changing menu using local produce -- much of it from the hotel's own kitchen garden -- while The Huntsman's Inn has log fires for chilly evenings. There's also an indoor pool, a steam room, a small gym and a spa pool, as well as free Wi-Fi in public areas. Dogs are welcome (for a small extra charge).

There are 46 bedrooms at the property, including five with 4-poster beds. For hi-tech luxury, couples can stay in the elegant Greek-style temple (the Rotunda). Here, you'll find remote-controlled lighting, a TV that descends from the ceiling, discreet speakers and an iPod docking station. Back in the main building there are disabled-access rooms on the ground floor, one with a roll-in shower.

Very friendly and helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble.
Other Comments
The hotel provides a very relaxed and omfortable stay away from the hustle and bustle of the lakes. The huntsman bar provides delicious meals and good service, the restaurant is nicely laid out, clean and well presented. We only had breakfasts in the restaurant and wish we had taken an evening meal there as I have no doubt it would have been well presented and delicious. Will do so on our next visit.

The accommodation and the food
Other Comments
Our room was on the 2nd floor and there is no lift, so elderly people may want to ask for a room lower down.

It was enjoyable except for the evening meal
Other Comments
The evening meal was quite poor and not good value for money, the main course of pork fillet was cold. For desert I had the rasberry etonmess which was just cream with a little merangue and some rasberry sauce, I did find one rasberry, the desert was sickly and like most people I noted in the dinning room I left mine. The staff were excellent and very friendly. If I book in the future it will be for bed and breakfast only.
