Handsome and historic, the Citizen Hotel is set in a cleverly restored 1920's building in downtown Sacramento. It attracts visiting politicians and local big wigs -- perhaps for its political film library (look out for some classic titles from former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger) or maybe for the swanky, intimate ambiance.

The hotel overlooks Cesar Chavez Plaza Park, which occupies a historical district studded with landmarks such as the State Capitol Building and Capitol Park. A few blocks away you’ll find Midtown, where most of the city’s galleries, restaurants and wine bars are situated. Also nearby are the Crocker Art Museum and the Sacramento River.

The upscale restaurant, Grange, is popular with food critics for its farm-fresh Californian fare, featuring local specialties such as Orland suckling pig and Passmore Ranch trout. Zagat describes it as “locavore heaven." Don’t miss the regular happy hour (Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.). The hotel does have a fitness center, but most guests prefer to run along the river instead -- the 32-mile-long trail is less than 10 blocks from the hotel.

Rooms are on the small side, but are well dressed with traditional striped wallpaper, velvet armchairs and Italian linens. Upgrade to the historic 13th floor for impressive tile work in the bathrooms and deep bath tubs (suites only). Whatever the design and layout, all rooms have Mac mini computers with giant flat screens instead of TVs, allowing guests to stream Netflix movies, check emails, and even order room service.

From the press:
  • "Overnight it became a power hub for politicians, business leaders, and deep-pocketed tourists" -- Fodor's
  • "[Grange] offers not only some of Sacramento's best cuisine but also the chance to spot the mayor, a senator or two, and perhaps even a local celebrity" -- Frommer's

Enjoyed Most: The room design was nice and the place was clean. The bellman was the only person who apologized for our trouble and was helpful with information.
Other Comments: The front desk staff were overwhelmed as their computer system was down. They seemed poorly trained and confused. They assigned us a room that already had someone else's bags in it (we met another couple on the same floor with the same problem.) Front desk reassigned us with no apology. The room was nice but too many extras - charges for internet use, parking (no self park or baggage carts available - only valet and bell service.) No extras for travelzoo mentioned or offered. Gym was a dark hole with minimal equip (altho sign inside said you could get a pass to a nearby gym.) We decided to eat at the hotel - no answer when we called the restaurant a few times to make reservations or order room service. We finally ate elsewhere for dinner. In the morning the restaurant didn't open until 8 and then only served brunch. Again, we ate elsewhere. Room was nice and clean and decor is cool. This hotel has potential but they have missed the mark for this (our first) trip and we won't be back.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel is very beautiful and we really liked the historic feel and design. The staff is very kind and accommodating. The one downside is you are in the heart of downtown Sacramento which can be a bit noisy on a Saturday night. Thank goodness the hotel provides ear plugs!

Enjoyed Most: Great location that was easily accessible to parks, the State Capitol, Old Sacramento, and Midtown. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The room was very well-appointed.
Other Comments: The on-site restaurant, Grange, is highly recommended, with an excellent, locally-sourced menu.
