The Bedruthan Hotel & Spa is a 4-star hotel overlooking Mawgan Porth beach, six miles north of Newquay, Cornwall. We visited the hotel and loved the quirky décor, with vibrant colours and rich fabrics in the rooms, retro ornaments and snug areas dotted around the property. It's stylish, but not over the top. There's a family-friendly ethos, but adults are catered for, including in the child-free Herring Restaurant and cocktail bar.

It has managed to bag dining awards for each of its restaurants, including the Wild Cafe, which won a Gold Award for the Best South West Casual Diner at the Taste of the West Awards 2014 and The Herring Restaurant, with a Gold Award for Restaurant of the Year at the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2013/14. Both serve fresh produce from local farmers and fishermen. There are also two bars, including a cocktail bar, and an indoor poolside bar serving beers and snacks.

The adult-only spa has an impressive glass-fronted room with a giant hydropool, four treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room and a caldarium. The indoor swimming pool is open from 8am-9pm, and adult-only sessions run from 8-9am and 6-7pm. The largest outdoor pool is open until 2 November and the additional two pools are heated and open all year (weather permitting).

Children are well looked after here, with an Ofsted-registered kids' club, table football, a jungle tumble ball pool, assault courses and a Wii games room.

The hotel puts on regular events throughout the year, such as a sunset, fire and feast evening around a fire pit (weather permitting). Prices of the events vary and pre-booking is essential. There's also an on-site shop selling arts and crafts, gifts and homeware.

Guests can book surf lessons with The Surf Club Cornwall, based at the hotel. Lessons are on Mawgan Porth beach in front of the hotel and normally last two hours. The minimum age is six. Prices start from £30 per person and lessons are available all year round.

National Trust-run Carnewas at Bedruthan is a 3-minute drive away, and is where iron, copper and lead were once mined. From here you can see Bedruthan Steps, a series of volcanic rock stacks, and walk along the marked paths to explore this dramatic coastline.

The staff are very friendly and accommodating, they seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and are keen to ensure that you have a great time with them. The log fire in the quiet room was very relaxing.

We found some of the staff rude, there was an issue with our booking even though we had an email confirming I booked and paid for 2 adults and 1child, they tried to charge us £25 per night for my daughter, they got our evening meal booking wrong. We have in the past had our daughters birthday party and christening at the hotel and they were very helpful but this stay has left a sour taste in our mouths, they blamed the booking error on Travelzoo and said they've had a lot of problems with previous bookings.

My partner says it has to be Ian in the bar. Delight to have a barman who knew his subject, was enthusiastic about it and made the whole experience enjoyable. For me, had a lovely meal in the Herring restaurant and our waitress Cherlyn was brilliant Friendly, professional and lovely

Very noisy due to wind - the skylights rattled. Great to have adult only restaurant and area for breakfast. Christmas decorations were a little on the spars

A good place to visit during the week outside of school holidays if you are a couple. It was quiet in late Nov and the staff were attentive. The best views in the main hotel are from 2nd floor rooms facing the sea. We had room 59 which had an amazing panoramic view. 1st floor rooms have a sea view too but it is partially obstructed by the dining room roof below. If you are unhappy with anything ask to change it. They are very accommodating.
