The BEST WESTERN Royal Beach Hotel Portsmouth, on the seafront at Southsea, has panoramic views over the Solent. The hotel is housed in a building that dates back to 1866 and still retains some of the original features, including stunning chandeliers, grand staircases, wood panelling and wrought-iron balconies.
The hotel is set in the seaside resort of Southsea, at the southern end of Portsea Island. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the impressive Spinnaker Tower are just over two miles away, while the Blue Reef Aquarium is 0.8 miles from the hotel.
For top-notch views and brasserie-style food, dine in the Ark Royal Restaurant, which offers an à la carte menu or a Sunday lunch carvery menu. Look out for the specials board for just-caught fish. For a more informal evening, try one of the two hotel bars.
Many bedrooms overlook the sea -- even the smallest single rooms -- and all come with free W-Fi. Families are well catered for, with more spacious rooms suitable for up to four people. Dogs are also welcome at the discretion of the hotel.
