Overview

With its striking Tudor-style facade, the Mercure Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Stratford-upon-Avon, dating back to the early 17th century. The property has won praise from The Daily Telegraph, which highlights its "attentive, pleasantly dedicated" staff.

The hotel is just over 10 minutes' walk from the railway station and a 5-minute walk from Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the Guild Chapel, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the RSC Tower (the climb is worth it for the views). The River Avon is also a short stroll away. Anne Hathaway's Cottage, which was home to Shakespeare's future wife, and is a well-preserved example of 16th-century Tudor architecture and is surrounded by pretty gardens, is less than 25 minutes' walk.

Downstairs, Marco's New York Italian Restaurant (part of the Marco Pierre White empire) serves a mix of pasta, steak, ribs and handmade pizzas, and has an outdoor terrace. The Quil Bar & Lounge offers a relaxed environment for afternoon tea or a glass of drink.

The hotel has plenty of original features, including Tudor-style leaded windows, beams and antique furniture. The bedrooms are spread across four buildings -- including a separate contemporary wing -- and all have a modern finish with free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities and toiletries in the bathroom.

Good breakfast and nice food in the restaurant. Hotel full of Tudor character yet the rooms had all modern amenities including tea and coffee facilities.

Perfect location. I scored the accommodation 3 because it is a very old building so clearly it doesn’t have the same frills a modern hotel has but we enjoyed our stay!!

The hotel was great, characterful, comfortable, brilliantly located. However, your booking info said double or twin bed, and I phoned the hotel who said the icelolly offer was only for double beds but said they'd switch us to a twin room. However, whe n we arrived we were told there was no record of this. Luckily, because the hotel wasn't full, they were able to give us a twin bed room, luckily. You need to sort out your deal with the hotel, and they need to do what they say they will do.

Situated near the theatres, cinemas, restaurants and the river, it is a building with lots of character, beams, fireplaces and flagstones. We only had a small room at the back but it was probably quieter than one at the front. Lots of sitting areas not only near the bar. We were also lucky enough to get a parking space in the car park.
Other Comments
We were pleasantly surprised that there was a lift as we expected that such an old building wouldn't have one. The breakfast was a buffet which is always our preference.

We were there on a bed breakfast deal. On arrival the reception staff was very efficient and helpful with advice about the Hotel and the town of Stratford upon Avon . The room was comfortable, warm and well looked after by the bedroom staff. A good choice of breakfast foods which were hot hot and well laid out.
Other Comments
I was very impressed by the bedroom staff who picked up it was my birthday and laid out a beautiful arrangement in towels of 2 swans. Just one thing which I should have mentioned at the time was that the hot tap in room 227 ran very slowly.
