The birthplace of Shakespeare is not short on history, but the Mercure Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare Hotel -- one of the oldest hotels in town, with a striking Tudor façade -- dates back to the early 17th century. The property has won praise from The Daily Telegraph, which highlights its "old-world charm".

The location is excellent, an 11-minute walk from the train station and close to Shakespeare’s birthplace, the Guild Chapel, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the RSC Tower (the climb is worth it for the views). The River Avon is also a very short walk away. Further out – though still walkable in 23 minutes – is Anne Hathaway's cottage (Shakespeare's future wife), which should not be missed. The 16th-century house is extremely well preserved and very picturesque.

Downstairs, the AA-Rosette-Awarded Marco's New York Italian Restaurant (part of the Marco Pierre White empire) serves its trademark mix of pasta, steak, ribs and handmade pizzas. The hotel also has two bars for a pre- or post-dinner aperitif.

The hotel has plenty of original features, including Tudor-style leaded windows, beams and antique furniture. The bedrooms all have a modern finish, and some have recently been renovated, although the floorboards can be creaky in places. The rooms at the back of the hotel include pretty views over the garden, and all are quiet.

Upgrade to a Privilege Room for free soft drinks in the mini bar and a Nespresso Machine. There are stories about some rooms being haunted, so make a note of this at booking if you are concerned. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Enjoyed Most: Food was very good, well presented and very tasty and excellent value.
Other Comments: Our room was small so I presume we did not get an upgrade which was on the voucher. However we did get a bottle of wine at dinner.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel is very central and quite characterful. I commend the receptionist, Liz, to whom I spoke on the phone before arrival as well as when we got there. She was very helpful and friendly. We had an excellent meal the first night in the hotel restaurant, Othello's. The main course of pork belly with Anna potatoes and jus was spectacularly good, and could have only been improved by the addition of maybe a few green beans, as there were no vegetables. The room was comfortable, but for reference, it is up two flights of stairs, the second of which is steep, narrow and winding.
Other Comments: We didn't get the free upgrade as per the voucher as there were no privilege rooms left. It would have been nice had the management acknowledged this upfront. Our room (208) was cosy, the main disadvantages being that there was a bright light outside the door which was on all night, I couldn't find a switch, and it shone through the doorframe. Also that we were right next to a firedoor whose automatic closing mechanism wsn't spectacularly efficient - it banged every time someone went through the door, and the bed is about 18" away on the other side of a fairly thin wall. It would have been helpful to have a power point on the left side of the bed - I had to leave my phone charging on the dressing table on the other side of the room. Not a huge problem, but annoying. A shower cap would have been a useful addition to the bathroom toiletries.

Enjoyed Most: Value for money, friendly staff, original quaint old building architecture, very central town location, convenient hotel parking, the evening dining and breakfast. If they had another discounted offer we would certainly stay again on our next visit.
Other Comments: Not really.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel was ideally situated for sightseeing. The breakfasts were good. The staff were friendly. Lovely building with comfortable bar areas to relax.
Other Comments: The hotel had limited parking facilities and we had to park in a local NCP car park for the first night. On the second night we were able to park in the hotel car park but were not told that we would be charged a fee of £10.00. We thought that this was expensive as we were residents.
