Map & Directions

Dublin airport is a 25-minute taxi ride from the hotel, although rush-hour traffic in the mornings and early evenings can make the journey quite a bit longer. The Aircoach (bus number 700) stops at nearby Kildare Street, a short walk away -- the journey takes 45 minutes (again, leave plenty of time at rush hours). Dublin Port, just across the River Liffey, is served by ferries from Liverpool and Holyhead. Mainline trains run into Connolly Station -- take a short train ride from here to Pearse Station, a six-minute walk from the hotel -- and Heuston, from where you can get any number of buses heading to Merrion Square. The Luas (tram) Green Line runs to St Stephen’s Green, a 15-minute walk away. If you’re driving, parking is available nearby for 12€ per 24 hours.

With its fantastic central location just off Merrion Square and its gorgeous 19th-century Italianate façade, the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel certainly makes a strong first impression. This grand 4-star hotel was formerly a prayer hall -- now it’s a comfortable hotel, home to 103 rooms and 12 suites.

This location, in the heart of Georgian Dublin, can’t be beat. The hotel lies just a short distance from Trinity College and the capital’s main museums (including The National Museum of Ireland’s Natural History and Archaeology branches and the National Gallery). St. Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street and Dublin Castle are all within 15 minutes’ walk.

Back at the hotel, Lanyon’s Restaurant serves up a full Irish or continental buffet breakfast from 7am (7:30am on weekends). The dinner menu is fairly traditional, and also offers up Irish classics such as slow-cooked Irish stew and sweet-cured bacon chop with mustard mash and buttered cabbage, as well as 28-day aged rib-eye steak. The wood-panelled President’s Bar offers lighter bites such as steak sandwiches and seafood chowder. Choose to work it all off at the 24-hour gym, or just sink into one of the bar’s sofas and order another martini.

Rooms and suites have a classic finish, with Wi-Fi access (extra charges apply) and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Some are on the small side, so upgrade for more space, and it’s worth requesting south-side rooms for their views of the city or Merrion Square.

Enjoyed Most: Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Hotel is minutes away from Trinity College and car rentals.
Other Comments: Narrow hallways allowed for a spacier room, but cracked marble floors, chipped wooden furnishings and stained shower curtains made for a dated hotel.

Enjoyed Most: My comments and marks below cover the hotel where my wife and I spent an enjoyable weekend. My further comments relate to my experience with Travelzoo which was NOT SATISFACTORY. I made my reservation on 23 November 2015 for 2 nights at the Davenport at a rate of £86 per night for bed and breakfast - a total of £172. The bill presented to me yesterday at the hotel was for 244.70 Euros and at yesterday's (hotel) rate of exchange that came to £185.50 - or £92.75 pn. I had not retained a copy of my original confirmation in full - but only the first sheet showing the £86 per night Travelzoo Deal rate. I insisted that this was all that I had contracted to pay. It was only when I returned home yesterday evening that I discovered that your subsequent email confirming my reservation mentioned that my contract for £172 would be payable to the hotel in local currency - NOT IN STERLING! In the outcome that would have involved an extra £13.50 NOT DISPLAYED in your original promotion.
Other Comments: I have now learned my lesson. Check all the small print. Do not rely on intermediaries. Do not trust "promotions" and do not deal with Travelzoo - from which I will now UNSUBSCRIBE. Deal direct with hotels and be sure of the terms of your booking.

Enjoyed Most: Very good customer service from the staff, they were friendly and helpful.
Other Comments: It was my birthday on our last day and the staff saw me opening my cards and presents at breakfast and gave me a a couple of desserts with a candle.
