The BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel is just outside York's historic defensive city walls. The hotel's name comes from its location near Monk Bar (ancient city gate), an elaborate, self-contained fortress dating back to the early 14th century. Formerly a prison, Monk Bar now houses a new Richard III exhibition, and has the city's only working portcullis (a heavy grating suspended vertically above the entrance), which was in use until 1970.
The hotel is a 7-minute walk from York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, and The Shambles, a picturesque cobbled street lined with timber-framed buildings that date back to the Middle Ages. The Yorkshire Museum, which houses Viking and Roman artefacts including the 1000-year-old Cawood Sword, is less than 10 minutes away.
The hotel features an on-site bar open to non-residents, and dining at the Yorkshire Bar & Grill, which serves modern European dishes with a Yorkshire twist, made with local seasonal produce. Although the restaurant is currently being refurbished, it is still open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel's bar offers a range of drinks and snacks until 11pm daily, and there is a private courtyard where you can have a coffee or glass of wine.
The contemporary rooms are pet friendly (£7.50 charge applies) and feature free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, with views of either the city or the hotel’s courtyard.
