The Hope Anchor Hotel is a family-run inn in East Sussex in the town of Rye, a place of "fine Georgian and medieval houses, cobbled streets and views of Romney Marsh", says The Guardian. The property is at the top of a hill overlooking the harbour, a few minutes' walk into the main town. It's the number one hotel in Rye on TripAdvisor and 100% of Travelzoo members who previously stayed here and reviewed their stay said they loved it.

Steeped in history, the inn was built around 1750, and was a watering hole for local sailors and shipbuilders. Legend has it the hotel's secret passages were once used by the Tenterden Gang for smuggling goods.

With only 13 rooms, The Hope Anchor Hotel is one of the smallest hotels in the town. Each room has its own design and the Junior Suite has a telescope so you can zoom in on the surroundings.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the restaurant which offers dishes using locally sourced produce such as fish from Rye Bay and meat from Romney Marsh. There's also a bar serving daily snacks and sandwiches.

In Rye you'll see quaint cobbled streets, narrow passageways and crooked Tudor buildings. Don’t miss Mermaid Street, which is named one of the prettiest streets in Britain by The Daily Telegraph. Climb the tower of St Marys Church for views of Rye and see the turret clock which is the oldest in England. Lamb House is another highlight, this National Trust Georgian property was home to American writer Henry James.

Three miles outside of Rye is Camber Sands, a popular beach for Kite surfers and parts of the beach were used for scenes in the 2015 film 'The Theory of Everything'. Alternatively, 30-minutes to the west of Rye is 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield where you can see the spot King Harold is said to have been killed.

Enjoyed Most: It was not our first visit to this hotel and we were extremely satisfied with our previous stays. It's a real shame that the building works and the room itself spoilt what could have been another enjoyable stay. On a plus side, the hotel was spotless, breakfast was good and customer service was great.
Other Comments: The room itself advertised as Deluxe Double feels very claustrophobic. It has eaves at two sides (which is not mentioned on the website) and is not suitable for people of regular height. We had to be very careful not to bang our heads when getting in/out of bed. The room is crammed with too much furniture and some of it with very sharp edges, so we got quite a few bruises. The building works outside started at 7:45am and ruined our sleep.

Enjoyed Most: The food was very good. The staff were very pleasant.
Other Comments: There was scaffolding outside both of the windows in our room with men who were working on the roof standing within touching distance of the main window. We were told that they would finish working for the day at 4pm but were still there at 5.30pm. They started again at just before 8am the next morning. The room was extremely dark because of the scaffolding and we felt very uncomfortable at the lack of privacy. I complained and the receptionist said she was very sorry and that the work should have been finished on July 18th.
