Overview

Nestled in a surprisingly rural setting less than a 10-minute drive south of downtown Portland, River’s Edge Hotel & Spa is a modern riverside retreat. It is positioned on the fringes of the trendy South Waterfront District, a short walk from the Aerial Tram and a 30-minute walk to the Butterfly Park. Downtown is not really walkable, but the Portland Streetcar is a five-minute walk away. The hotel also offers free one-way transfers into the city center (drop-off only) via a Lincoln Navigator -- just ask at reception when you check in.

Another highlight is the 13,000-square-foot spa, which is open for appointments from 7 a.m - 9 p.m. (advance reservations required). There’s also a spacious 24-hour fitness center. Borrow one of the hotel’s free bikes and explore the Willamette Greenway Trail or head for the hills in neighboring Marquam Nature Park, where there are 40 miles of jogging trails and 178 acres of parkland.

The riverfront position of the on-site restaurant, Aquariva, offers some great views -- grab a seat on the outdoor terrace if you can.

Chic and comfortable, the rooms have large windows to make the most of the countryside or river-bend views, and many rooms have balconies. Opt for a suite for a separate sitting room, where you can curl up in front of the gas fireplace in cooler months. Pets are welcome (extra charge applies), with all rooms at the hotel being dog-friendly.

From the press:
  • "This tranquil boutique property is sheltered among trees along the meandering Willamette River" -- Fodor’s
  • "The hotel rooms are stylish (and some have sweet river views), while the spa is a lavish two-story affair offering a wide range of treatments" -- Sunset

Pros: Nice clean rooms, pleasant staff, beautiful trails, good food, nice location close to street car and tram to get downtown. Cons: restaurant doesn’t open early enough on weekends, didn’t restock coffee and cups on the stay over, valet really not necessary, no pool and difficult to get massage appointments and hair styling was unavailable.

The 12-year old was hoping there would be a pool and there wasn't. A bit of a mixup that ended with our room not being tidied any of the three days we were there.

We ate breakfast at the restaurant next door (Rosswood) and had a fabulous breakfast. I hadn't heard of it before but we liked the food very much and service was great.

It was out of the center of Portland but it was easy to get into the center when we needed to.

Wonderful to wake up with a view of the river! Also, breakfast was really tasty, not your usual continental breakfast fare.

Our stay was far too brief -- we arrived late and left early, so had little time to explore the hotel or visit the spa. The front desk was so helpful though, and Rosewood packed our breakfast to go.

The view of the river was mesmerizing in springtime with the trees just beginning to leaf out. Walking the riverside path beneath our balcony was special. We felt sheltered and pampered looking out from the comfort of our bed. The restaurant and its bar were excellent, the staff everywhere very friendly if all very young. Definitely worth the extra amount for a water view!

Details were a bit rough: missing hairdryer, unset clock, no print info about the hotel in the room, no hanger for the door to decline maid service (declining gives you a coupon for a discount at the restaurant). A LONG wait for hot water, as if the room hadn't been used in months. We got an online deal so the price was worth it to us, esp. the half price for valet parking (which is the ONLY option). Spa was nice though we didn't use it much. Amenities were pretty provincial: only almond or soy milk for the coffee, only green or Earl Grey for the tea, etc. For older, non-Portlandia-type guests these trendy details are irritating. Soft plus firm pillows were available, though the soft wasn't all that soft and gave me a neck ache. I would stay here again if we got the same discount.
