The Academy is a 4-star boutique townhouse complex in London's bustling West End. The 18th-century hotel is made up of five Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury and "offers a sense of sanctuary just yards from the bustle of Bloomsbury and Oxford Street", says Frommer's.

The hotel is in a great location -- Covent Garden is a 15-minute walk away, the shops on Oxford Street are a 14-minute walk away and Bond Street is a 22-minute walk away.

Through wide, twisting corridors and staircases you'll find 49 rooms and suites restored to accentuate their Regency character, some with views over the property's private courtyard gardens. Some of the Junior Suites include marble fireplaces, and all have Nespresso machines. Homely features include a well-stocked library, antique furniture and floral fabrics.

Guests can dine in the Alchemy Bar, which serves classic British dishes such as beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, as well as international cuisine. You can take afternoon tea in the library, the conservatory or one of the two private courtyard gardens.

From the press:

  • "The Academy goes for the country intellectual look, in keeping with Bloomsbury's studious yet decadent history" -- Time Out
  • "A private courtyard garden adds allure to this cosy boutique hotel set in a series of renovated Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury" -- Zagat

I didn't know what to expect and I was on my own in London in the middle of Winter. I was bowled away by the kind welcome, beautiful room and delicious afternoon tea. This is a lovely hotel.

The breakfast was excellent and the staff were very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is lovely and calming and the garden and conservatory are like an oasis in the middle of the city.

The hotel is very well placed for easy access to Oxford St and the West End but is in a lovely area that is quiet on an evening.

Location was very good and the scones were very nice.

Staff were not as friendly as one would have expected and somewhat laconic. The hotel and our room were in need of updating and a thorough clean. In retrospect I would have preferred a stay in the Travelodge or Premier Inn, I was hoping for a nice almost boutique hotel experience at the Academy as it was my partners birthday, hence the trip and was sorely disappointed.

Being upgraded to a Suite! Beautiful large room, very well equipped.

Eating options a little bit confused. The hotel suggests you can eat in the bar but it was all a little vague so we opted to go out instead. Probably missed out as the cooked breakfast was very good.

Great location. Rooms are small by North American standards, but quite adequate. Staff were super. No elevator, but air conditioning.
Other Comments
Our package came with a full breakfast, which was substantial. Would have been nice to be able to opt for something smaller, like eggs on toast, and then upgrade from coffee to a cappuccino. But that is a small quibble.
