The Saguaro Palm Springs opened to acclaim in 2012 and swiftly picked up a chic, loyal following and rave reviews from Condé Nast Traveler, which chose it as one of the World’s Best New Hotels in 2013. The property is located on the quieter southern end of Palm Springs, though the colorful, retro décor is anything but muted.

The hotel has a trendy on-site restaurant -- El Jefe where guests can sip freshly made cocktails like a charred pineapple margarita and enjoy small plates like shrimp chorizo tacos or queso fondido with duck barbacoa.

The hotel’s best feature, however, is its pool deck with two hot tubs and an Olympic-size pool, which stays open late. It attracts a lively crowd on the weekends, when the DJ spins all day long and the deck buzzes with the young and trendy. The stunning mountain backdrop only makes it more picturesque. Take note, however: During the week, the partiers head back to LA, and the hotel scene is much quieter and more family oriented.

The hotel may be small, but it isn’t short on amenities. There’s a 24-hour gym, yoga classes every morning and a shuttle bus that provides transport to downtown Palm Springs. There’s also a bocce ball court, a small spa and bikes with which to explore the surrounding mountain trails.

The rooms are fun with purple carpets, handcrafted Mexican furniture, vintage prints and striped bedspreads. Suites have separate living rooms, and almost every room has a balcony or patio. The hotel is pet friendly and there is no extra fee.

There is an additional $25 daily resort fee which covers morning yoga classes, a local shuttle service to downtown, Wi-Fi access and on-site parking.

From the press:

  • "Stop in at The Saguaro Palm Springs and it feels like you've landed at the bottom of a rainbow" -- The Huffington Post
  • "A startling, rainbow-hued oasis ... [that] caters to pet-toting partygoers who appreciate its lively pool and casual- and fine-dining options" -- Fodor's

Enjoyed Most: Yoga classes are great along with massages and facials.
Other Comments: I am disabled and I was using a walker while waiting for an elevator to go to yoga at 8:00 a.m. Two big dogs raced out of hotel room towards me at full speed and I begged the owner to call them back of which he never did. I banged one with my Walker in self-defense and this big man got threatening for "touching" his dog. The dogs ran back into the hotel room and out at me again at a full "run". Again he never called them back and I was very terrified of getting knocked over. I complained to the hotel management. They stated it was a dog "hotel" so I ended up calling the police. The management was polite but when another guest threatens or assaults another guest the police should be called by management. I was afraid to go back to my room on my own. Good thing I was checking out that day. I am traumatized! Unfortunately, the hotel is in bad shape. There is only one elevator; the other hasn't worked for 6 months. Property has changed hands and has gone down hill....

Enjoyed Most: The room was OK – fresh paint, new carpet and bathroom fixtures, but nothing special.
Other Comments: I will never stay at this hotel again. The outside “security” door did not lock, and anyone could enter the hallway from the parking lot 24 hrs. a day without a key. Upon check-in, the Desk Clerk could not find the special rate Travelzoo reservation. He checked with the office and said that they would honor the Travelzoo rate. When I checked out, the same Desk Clerked charged my credit card that was on file without showing me the bill. When he showed it to me, I was floored. It was $300 higher than it should have been (for 2 nights). He then went through the motions of crediting the whole amount so he could start over. In fact, he did not issue the credit. They also charged me a no-show fee for the a room that I did not occupy. This is the room for the Travelzoo reservation. They credited this right away. It is a month later and the Saguaro has issue 2 credits to correct the initial mistake, but they still have not credited the whole amount. This place is a mess.

Other Comments: Music round the pool was dreadful.
