Overview
Eleven miles from Bath in the rolling Somerset countryside lies Ston Easton Park -- "one of the West Country’s most romantic estates," says Condé Nast Traveler. The property is set on 36 acres, with its own gurgling river and views of the Mendip Hills. The walled Victorian kitchen gardens provide organic fruit and vegetables, herbs and edible flowers to the hotel’s award-winning Sorrel Restaurant -- an impressive 80% of the restaurant’s fresh produce comes from here. The elegant restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for its "carefully worked-out menus" and the "intense flavours and pin-sharp presentations" (The AA Restaurant Guide). Try the quail galantine with foie gras mousse and beetroot puree, the loin of local Mendip venison with hazelnuts and celeriac, and the dark chocolate torte and blood orange sorbet. But leave room for the cheese cart -- the restaurant has an excellent selection of local favorites.
The rooms, described as "wonderful" by Condé Nast Traveler, combine English country-house gentility and antique furniture with comfortable beds and tasteful décor. Complimentary Wi-Fi and DVD players are standard, and you can expect courtyard, village or countryside views. The State Rooms are the largest, with high ceilings, four-poster beds and views over the River Norr or croquet lawn.
There is no spa on site, but guests can arrange to have a treatment in their room. Tennis and croquet are played on the grounds (weather permitting), and there are regular free tours of the house. Maps, wellies and Oscar the dog are all available to borrow from the reception desk. Further afield, Bath, Bristol, Wells, Stonehenge and Cheddar Gorge are easily reachable.
