Why We Love This Hotel

  • Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is in the rural Sussex village of Rusper
  • This 17th-century country house hotel is set in more than 40 acres of grounds and has a private lake
  • The restaurant has an AA Rosette

Overview

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and Wakehurst are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust but managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; it's home to a wild botanic garden and a Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor house.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as house smoked mackerel croquettes, seabass en papillote and banana tart tatin.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

We stayed at Ghyll Manor on a Travelzoo deal and had a great time. At the reception we were greeted by a lovely lady who answered any questions we had. Its a great looking hotel with grounds to match well worth a visit.

The hotel upgraded us as our room had not been correctly prepared. It was complimentary and kind of them - although I had actually liked the room we were meant to have better. The Food and staff were lovely.
Other Comments
The hotel is lovely but with just a little bit of tweaking could be fabulous. Very little things let them down : slow breakfast service, I had to remake the bed as it was not made very well/to my liking. Small things that don't cost money often are the best things in customer service such as check backs when in the restaurant, Double checking the rooms before the housekeeping staff leave. A few lost opportunities from the staff to upsell such as if we'd been offered our buck fizz on arrival we would have had a bottle of wine with dinner and the breakfast menu wasn't explained well and I might have asked for smoked salmon.
