"One of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities" according to Rough Guides, Santa Fe is a special destination, and the Inn and Spa at Loretto is one of its best-known hotels. The property is modeled on the adobe village of Taos Pueblo (a national landmark) and draws a loyal crowd with classic Southwestern decor and a terrific downtown location, one block from Santa Fe Plaza.

The hotel is surrounded by some of the area’s top museums, including the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Santa Fe Children's Museum. Santa Fe’s position on the edge of the Rockies means it’s also good for outdoor activities, including hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter.

There’s plenty at the hotel to keep guests occupied too, including two restaurants, a heated outdoor pool, a small fitness center and a spa. Luminaria’s fine dining focuses on creative Southwestern dishes like sea bass with corn quinoa and chimichurri. Opt for a table outdoors in warmer months -- the romantic terrace is surrounded by lavender-scented gardens. There’s also a chic cocktail bar, which hosts two happy hours (5-6:30pm and 9-10pm).

Rooms have terracotta-red walls and patterned blankets lending a warm Southwestern look. All are decorated with work from local artists, and some come with kiva fireplaces. Leather armchairs, carpeted floors and wooden headboards keep the rooms cozy despite their spacious size -- Fodor’s notes that they’re some of the largest in the downtown area. Pricier rooms have private or shared balconies, and the best have views over the gothic Loretto Chapel next door.

There is a daily resort fee of $14 per room, which covers local calls, newspapers, Internet access, morning coffee and use of the fitness room.

From the press:
  • "This plush, oft-photographed, pueblo-inspired property attracts a loyal clientele, many of whom swear by the friendly staff and high decorating standards" -- Fodor's
  • "The location, just a few blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza, can’t be beat" -- Travel + Leisure
  • "It is fairly quiet and has nice views -- especially on the northeast side, where you'll see both the historic St. Francis Cathedral and the Loretto Chapel" -- Frommer's

Enjoyed Most: The bar and outdoor areas and all of the shops.
Other Comments: They definitely gave us the cheapest room overlooking the parking lot on the first floor. That was a little disappointing.

Enjoyed Most: The ambiance of the hotel and the location of the hotel.
Other Comments: The wait staff in the lounge was not very attentive or friendly at all, on two different visits. We were made to feel like it was an imposition to order a drink.

Enjoyed Most: The Inn at Loretto is located downtown and very convenient. The hotel is beautiful. The restaurant is good, but expensive. Our room was very comfortable, although it was near the ice machine and overlooked the parking lot and a trash area. Travelling Zoo's price was great and included the resort fee. Thank you! Parking was expensive-$21/day, but I guess one has to expect that in a downtown area. The valet did not even put our luggage in the trunk. I guess we tipped him too soon.

Enjoyed Most: Charm. History.
Other Comments: We've stayed at the Inn at Loretto before and had a better experience. Disappointed this time. I didn't like location of room. Really didn't like that only option was for valet parking. No self park. The heater fan was very noisy. Poor Housekeeping quality. Perhaps the automatic charge for resort fee which includes no tipping for Housekeeping may be causing complacency. Just not the same experience as previously.
