The Royal Exeter Hotel is a stately Victorian property in Bournemouth town centre, five minutes' walk from the beach. It was once home to Lewis Tregonwell, a naval captain charged with defending the coastline around Bournemouth.

Lonely Planet sums up why Bournemouth is a great place to visit, pointing out its "glorious 7-mile strip of soft sand", "hip hideaways" and "tempting watersports". There's an abundance of things to see and do, including Bournemouth Gardens and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, which are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. You can also catch a show at the Bournemouth International Centre, which is directly opposite the hotel.

Bar So serves food and drink throughout the day, and mixologists make bespoke, seasonal and classic cocktails. 1812 Restaurant & Bar serves European fare and offers both set and à la carte menus. It has an energetic vibe, with entertainment including live music, so it may be a little noisy.

The hotel has 54 bedrooms, all with free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There's also a small gym.

Lovely old building but creaking floorboards in bedrooms and corridors would drive you mad if there longer than one night!

Problem with drink voucher was swiftly sorted out. Would stay again but try to avoid weekend. Both bars were playing extremely loud music but luckily weather was fine so could sit outside.

Had a Travelzoo 2 night stay with dinner first night including a bottle of wine and breakfast both mornings. The food was excellent and the staff were professional, just a couple of items on the menu had a surcharge (steak and the cheese board) but plenty to choose from otherwise. The full English breakfast was ordered at the table rather than using a buffet, that included tea and toast and preferred eggs to order. Can't fault this place except the glass of wine at the bar was pricey but overall, a fab weekend.

Staff were all exceptionally customer focused. Amy in the Restaraunt and the rest of her team were extremely efficient and knowledgeable about the menu. Housekeeping kept all areas spotless both in the bedrooms and throughout the hotel. The 2 male reception/front of house staff that greeted us were exceptionally customer focused, friendly, helpful and without doubt a credit to their industry - Well done all
