The Royal Exeter Hotel is a Victorian mansion in Bournemouth town centre and was one of the first hotels in the town. It was originally home to Lewis Tregonwell, a naval captain charged with defending the coastline around Bournemouth. The AA Hotel Guide 2016 highlights the "smart" public areas and "exciting" bar, and 98% of Travelzoo members who stayed here and reviewed their experience said they loved it, particularly the "excellent food" and "great location".

There are 54 bedrooms, split between Standard and Executive rooms. All have free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. Executive rooms have modern décor and a spa bath. There's also a small gym.

Bar So serves food and drink throughout the day. 1812 Restaurant & Bar has an energetic vibe, with live music from Thursday-Sunday, so it can be noisy at times. Mixologists make bespoke, seasonal and classic cocktails. The restaurant offers set and à la carte menus, featuring British and French dishes.

Lonely Planet sums up why Bournemouth is a great place to visit, pointing out its "glorious 7-mile strip of soft sand", "hip hideaways" and "tempting watersports". There's a great selection of things to see and do, including Bournemouth Gardens and the Oceanarium (The Bournemouth Aquarium), both are a 5-minute walk from the hotel, or you can see a show at the Bournemouth International Centre, which is opposite The Royal Exeter Hotel.

Enjoyed Most: Dinner and breakfast were both excellent.
Other Comments: A thoroughly enjoyable stay in every way except one. The shower could only produce boiling hot water as the controls did not respond and there were no operational instructions.

Enjoyed Most: When phoning prior to attending and on our actual arrival I found the reception staff very friendly and efficient. The room was very pleasant (apart from the Victorian squeaky floorboards) and comfortable. Access through the hotel in a wheelchair was easy except for the shallow step en route to our bedroom and back to reception and the dining room - I had to get out of the chair to negotiate even the one step. The experience was most satisfying and we will endeavour to go there again.
Other Comments: Whilst the breakfasts were more than adequate and of exceptional value I think we would have liked a slightly wider choice of evening meal menu. Neither of us want a vegetarian meal so our choices were steak or fish. Even as a carnivore I would have liked an occasional variation from the very ample steaks - perhaps a pork or lamb alternative? Otherwise we could not fault the food's quantity or presentation and the service was excellently attentive.
