The Royal Exeter Hotel is a stately Victorian property in Bournemouth town centre, five minutes' walk from the beach. It was once home to Lewis Tregonwell, a naval captain charged with defending the coastline around Bournemouth.

Lonely Planet sums up why Bournemouth is a great place to visit, pointing out its "glorious 7-mile strip of soft sand", "hip hideaways" and "tempting watersports". There's an abundance of things to see and do, including Bournemouth Gardens and the Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, which are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. You can also catch a show at the Bournemouth International Centre, which is directly opposite the hotel.

Bar So serves food and drink throughout the day, and mixologists make bespoke, seasonal and classic cocktails. 1812 Restaurant & Bar serves European fare and offers both set and à la carte menus. It has an energetic vibe, with entertainment including live music, so it may be a little noisy.

The hotel has 54 bedrooms, and all have free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There's also a small gym.

Excellent value for an overnight stay Large old fashioned hotel and allocated a large old fashioned room, but spotlessly clean. In contrast the bar was modern and trendy and also large. Being close to the promenade it was ideal for an early morning jog along the beach.

The friendliness of the staff, the food and location.

The hotel is opposite the BIC, it's a short walk to the pier, beach, parks and town centre. Of course like any older building I could find things to criticise but it's more than offset by everything else including a decent carpark. Well done to everyone at the Exeter

Very friendly staff, excellent location with the bonus of free parking. Great cocktail bar. Room was comfortable only negative was the walls seemed thin as you could hear other guests in there adjoining rooms or rooms above. The food in the restaurant was the best value with a 3 course a la carter meal costing £15!! The chef prepares & presents meals as though a Michelin star restaurant will definitely return!
