Solara Resort & Spa is a modern mountain chalet and the largest resort in Canmore. A former mining town that lacks the big brand names of most mountain resorts, “Banff's less crowded and less costly sibling” (Fodor’s) has a quaint, villagelike feel. There are three ski resorts (Sunshine Village, Mount Norquay and Lake Louise) within an hour drive, and Banff National Park is still only a 20-minute drive away. There are high-octane activities like ice climbing, rafting and kayaking, as well as leisurely pursuits like fishing and soaking in the natural hot springs.

After a day of hiking in the mountains or racing down the snowy slopes, retreat to the hotel’s 9,500-square-foot wellness area. Here you can soothe aching muscles in the indoor hot tub, steam room and sauna, while the kids splash around in the play fountains and paddle in the wading pool. When the weather’s fine, borrow a bike for free from the hotel’s collection and explore the national park trails.

Choose between one-, two- and three-bedroom suites -- all offer a large living room with a sofa bed and a full gourmet kitchen, including granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Leather sofas, fireplaces and polished floorboards carry on the mountain-chic theme, and wine fridges add a touch of luxury. There’s also a washer/dryer in each, and all rooms have a private patio or balcony (some with an electric grill for barbecuing).

Enjoyed Most: The room. We didn't spend any time at the spa, so most definitely the room.
Other Comments: The only problem we had was that while we were out touring Canmore, the staff brought us the pass to Banff National Park. It was until the next day that we noticed that the pass was only good until 4:00 pm that day. We were not told it was valid for the day that we were out touring Canmore.

Enjoyed Most: Lovely rooms, great location.

Enjoyed Most: It is well situated for easy access to downtown. The view from our small balcony was spectacular. The suite was actually quite large as it was two adjoining suites. Beds were very comfortable.
Other Comments: The cleanliness of the suite. We questioned whether the floor had been vacuumed before our arrival as there was popcorn on the rug and the kitchen floor was quite dirty. Also the exterior windows were very dirty (finger prints). We also had to call Housekeeping twice as there was no dish towels in the kitchen and only one face cloth in the bathroom. We also called so they would turn on the gas for the fireplace. Housekeeping was prompt with these requests.

Enjoyed Most: Room was very modern and spacious
Other Comments: I felt that the cleanliness of our suite was not the best. We found crumbs and items that did not belong to is on the floor which would indicate that the suite was not even vacuumed. The table and countertops did not look to be wiped as there were dirty marks all over them. The floor in the bathroom (cork) was damaged and lifting and bubbling. I would expect a much more thouroghly cleaned and maintained suite at this caliber and price point.
