Featured in the 2014 Michelin Guide, the Chateau Rhianfa is a fairytale property overlooking the Menai Strait from the island of Anglesey (known for being the former home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge). The Grade-II-listed hotel was modeled after the 16th-century castles of the Loire Valley and is a huge property, encompassing four acres and its own private jetty and beach. In spite of this, 22 bedrooms and down-to-earth service help keep it intimate.

Expect views stretching as far as Snowdonia and a warren of rooms to explore. You'll find a decent gym, hot tub and sauna on site, and a tennis court (racquets and balls are available to borrow), plus a cellar for wine tastings and a games room with a pool table. Guests can take a speedboat trip around Anglesey (charge applies), and guided walking tours can be arranged. The town of Beaumaris, with its 13th-century castle (built by King Edward I), is less than 10 minutes' drive away.

Dinner time here is a very sociable experience -- guests are treated to aperitifs in the lounge before dining together at a large communal table in the Great Hall. It's a five-course set menu using local, organic produce wherever possible (changes can be made for dietary requirements with advance warning). Sandwiches and afternoon tea are available during the day, and a continental buffet breakfast is included (Welsh breakfasts can be cooked to order for an extra charge).

Rooms were newly furnished when the hotel opened in 2012 and combine bold colors with antique furniture. The best have views over the strait and the Menai suspension bridge. Suites are especially decadent -- one has a four-poster bed and a walk-in shower built into its turret; others have free-standing baths by the bed. All are equipped with free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

From the press:
  • "Rooms mix Victorian interiors with modern touches and there are plenty of places in which to relax" -- The Times
  • "Amazing views all the way from the Menai Strait at the bottom of the garden and the beach to the top of Snowdonia Mountain range" -- Condé Nast Johansens
  • "The striking Victorian interior displays original wood panelling, stained glass and turrets, with contrast with bold modern colour schemes" -- Michelin Guide

Enjoyed Most: The location and views and the friendly helpful staff.
Other Comments: Our room was at the back of the hotel and quite dark so I asked for a room facing the Menai Straits and we were lucky there was another room available, so we swapped. The staff were very helpful.
