Set at the end of a tree-lined drive, Carberry Tower is fairytale-like castle with a fascinating history and royal connections -- it was here that Mary Queen of Scots surrendered in the 16th century and where the current Queen of England stayed in the 1960s. The hotel is 20 minutes by car from the heart of Edinburgh and a 10-minute drive from the coastal town of Musselburgh. Here you’ll find the nearest station, where you can catch a 10-minute train into Edinburgh’s Waverley Station.

Rooms are all found within the main building and are decorated traditionally, with thick carpets and plenty of tartan. All have high ceilings and some have fireplaces, four-poster beds and opulent chandeliers. Bathrooms are very swanky, most with walk-in showers (some with baths too). Guests awake to a continental buffet, with a hot Scottish breakfast, including scones, homemade baked beans and haggis, also available (charge applies).

Set on 35 acres, the hotel offers plenty in the way of outdoors activities. Choose between traditional clay pigeon shooting, archery and falconry as well as more modern Segway tours. There are also well-tended gardens to explore and whiskey tasting is offered back at the main house. It doesn't have a restaurant as such, but every evening a set four-course banquet is served in the Tower Dining Room. At the bar, you'll find an extensive whiskey selection, including a good range of 10- and 12-year-old whiskeys as well as the rarer 40-year-old Glenfarclas.

Nearby, Dalkeith Park (open daily April-October), Inveresk Lodge Garden (open daily), Musselburgh Racecourse and Musselburgh Links (one of the oldest golf courses in the world) are 5-10 minutes away by car. Further afield, the mysterious caves at Gilmerton Cove are a 15-minute drive away. On your return to the castle, settle down in the lounge for Scottish-themed afternoon tea, including haggis sausage sandwiches and Highland shortbread (daily, from midday).

Enjoyed Most: Lovely building and grounds with some fantasticly lovely public rooms which were sadly, not used for our experience. There is a beautiful dining room all laid out with nice china and silverware which could have been used for our meal but wasn't, I have no idea why, perhaps the hotel would like to answer?
Other Comments: When I booked this deal, what attracted me was the idea of a 'Banquet experience'. We were with friends who had never visited Scotland before and I thought that this would be a very Scottish meal with a group of people chatting and getting to know one another over the canapes then being seated around a big table in maybe the manorial hall or the castle dining room, with a good atmosphere and ambience and maybe pipes or dancers afterwards. What we got, was canapes served to us and two other people in the bar area which can only be described as dingy, followed by being seated at a table on our own in another dingy room on the ground floor. We could have been in a wine bar. The food wasn't brilliant either, and at the end of our meal the waitress accidently dropped some cutlery and food from one of our plates which was still there the following morning at breakfast time. This was not a banquet! Our room was tiny on the top floor, nicely decorated and clean but no room for luggage.

Enjoyed Most: Beautiful surroundings and a feeling of luxury. A special mention for Dennis - Irish/Scottish Friday night barman who successfully combined efficiency, professionalism and friendliness - not easy. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and most were efficient.
Other Comments: We had a basic room which was small but beautifully furnished. There was lovely bedding but the effect was spoiled by a dirty, creased and ill-fitting valance sheet. I did mention this to reception so hopefully it was rectified. We were to be served Prosecco and canapes at 7p.m. We arrived at 7 and were duly served drink but canapes did not arrive until 7.25 - just before we went in to dinner - not good. For dinner we asked for one rare beef and one very well done - both arrived as medium. My husbands was taken away to be cooked more (I just accepted mine) and hence we did not actually eat together. This was made worse by the inexperienced waitress - when I finished she asked my husband if he wanted to carry on. When he said "yes" she took away my plate!

Enjoyed Most: The comfort and ambience. The staff were friendly and helpful. The building and estate is superb.
Other Comments: The staff should find another way of addressing the clients - my wife is not a "guy"
