The Berkeley is an intimate boutique hotel on a pretty tree-lined street, three blocks from the riverfront. Built in 1988, the red-brick building has the feel of a much older property. It is set on Cary Street in the lively Shockoe Slip, a former manufacturing district that now buzzes with nightlife. It’s a great base for sightseeing, positioned two blocks from Capitol Square (there are free one-hour tours daily) and 15 minutes on foot from the American Civil War Center. It’s also handy for business travelers and is just a 20-minute walk from Richmond’s convention center.

The in-house restaurant serves classic fare, featuring dishes such as crab bisque, acorn squash risotto and espresso crème brûlée. A TV behind the bar screens live sports, and there’s free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

The hotel provides free passes to the fitness center at the James Center YMCA two blocks away, where there’s a pool, racquetball and squash courts, and a gym (closed Sundays). Alternatively, take your exercise outdoors -- the 1.25-mile Canal Walk trail starts just around the corner and provides easy access to the only metropolitan white-water river in the country. Jog the Virginia Capital Trail to the east for glimpses of downtown sights, or head west for the wilder North Bank Trail.

The rooms have high ceilings, carpeted floors and inlaid cherry-wood furniture, and a traditional turndown service is offered nightly. Bathrooms are more modern and have walk-in massage showers. Rooms vary quite a bit in size, but all are comfortable. Opt for a room to the rear for a quieter night (Cary Street can be noisy), but for the best views and a large private terrace, upgrade to a Terrace Suite.

Enjoyed Most: The restaurant had very good food, bartender was very accommodating
Other Comments: I didn't receive the bottled water and drinks that was part of the promotion. When I told the front desk clerk she said she wasn't familiar with travelzoo or the special. Not friendly at all. The rooftop bar was closed, due to weather, we were told. It was gorgeous weather.

Enjoyed Most: The bathroom was nice and breakfast was great.
Other Comments: It was not as nice as I expected. The room was fine, but a little shabby. Very nice bathroom--better than the actual sleeping room.

Enjoyed Most: Staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Other Comments: My Travelzoo rate and deal of free valet parking was not reflected on the bill at first - but when I noted it at check out, it was corrected. They suspected that the person who entered the reservation did not note the deal. We also did not get our chocolate covered strawberries, but I didn't bring that up.
