Hip, funky and affordable, the Basecamp Hotel is a swell boutique addition to the South Lake Tahoe scene. Opened in summer 2012 after a thorough overhaul, the hotel was named one of the Best New Mountain Resorts in 2013 by Travel + Leisure, and now sports a summer-camp-chic ambiance, fire pits for nightly s’mores and a rooftop hot tub (open until 10 p.m.).

The hotel is just a five-minute stroll to the Heavenly Gondola lifts and to the lake where guests get free access to the private Lakeside Beach. There are big-name casinos just across the road, and Heavenly Mountain Resort is also a five-minute walk away, where you’ll find restaurants, a cinema and an outdoor ice rink (November-April). In warmer months, there’s hiking in the Desolation Wilderness or on the Lam Watah Trail, and golf at the nearby Bijou Park and Zephyr Cove Park courses.

Wi-Fi and a continental breakfast are complimentary at the hotel, and s’mores kits are handed out in the lobby to toast over the fire. There’s no on-site restaurant, but they do a communal dinner on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. from December-March for an extra charge (pre-bookings required). There’s also a small bar in the lobby, serving local microbrews, wine and gourmet hot chocolate, and the happy hour (daily, 3-6 p.m.) is excellent, with half-priced beer and wine.

Cabin-style rooms have an outdoorsy theme -- think tent stakes for gear racks, tarpaulins hung behind the bed as a headboard and camping motifs on the shower curtains. Fridges or mini bars aren’t provided, but there’s a mini cooler box filled with ice to keep drinks chilled. Most rooms don’t have air conditioning, though they do provide fans (this is not uncommon in Lake Tahoe), and there are no elevators, so request a room on the ground floor if you have mobility issues.

From the press:
  • "Wes Anderson called -- he wants his set back. With their Coleman lantern-style lamps and other nostalgic camping artifacts, the comfy rooms manage coziness and kitschy chic without veering into twee or fussy (or depriving you of a flat-screen TV)" -- The New York Times

Enjoyed Most: The camping theme of the rooms is unusual and neat. The housekeeping staff was friendly and accomodating and the room was very clean. However, the shower is very tiny. The location is ideal. Access to the private beach 3 blocks awar is a nice plus, especially since there was no place to lounge peacefully at the property. Only 2 blocks to the casinos.
Other Comments: Property is under renovation. Construction noise continually during the day. Staff does not appear experienced in the hospitality industry. They are not friendly, with the exception of "Mike". The nicer of two hot tubs was locked for the majority of our stay. There is no room coffe maker nor a refrigerator. It's been ages since we stayed somewhere where these amenities were not provided. They should forget their "breakfast". It is coffee, juice, day old cookies/pastries and golf ball sized mandarins - that's it. There are several rooms that open on to the street, literally, and overlook an abandoned construction site. Fortunately Mike changed our room assignment to a room overlooking their parking lot. Not pretty but at least safer.

Enjoyed Most: The location was great...near the beach, near downtown.
Other Comments: Nice rooms, great bathroom.
Irene Jun 26, 2015 Walnut Creek, CA, United States
Enjoyed Most: Location was close to casino.
Other Comments: Maid did not come until 5:45 pm! Cheap room on the road as opposed to ones with patios. Breakfast very skimpy. In room refrigerator had no freezer. No AC. Bath window opened over very loud noisy machine. 24 hours later have still not received bill receipt (manager at check out did not know how and said when girl returned she would email.) no channel guide for TV and limited channels.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel was clean and had a fun atmosphere.
Other Comments: The hotel did not have the reservation I made through Travelzoo. They had to scramble to put us in a less desirable room. I don't think I will use Travelzoo again.
Lisa Jun 22, 2015 Reno, NV, United States
Enjoyed Most: The bed was fairly comfortable
Other Comments: The rooms only had 1 wash cloth, there was someone drilling on the roof above our room fairly early in the morning, it was so loud we had to leave the room. The staff looked put out when you told them there were missing items from the breakfast such as cream for coffee, just a total disappointment.
