"The woman at the front desk on the evening shift was fantastic. She suggested restaurants each night and they were fabulous. She never failed to greet us each time we can in or went out. She made us feel like she was there to assist us."

The 19th century landmark building’s storied past includes previous lives as the home of a coffee import company, a Union hospital and now a 4-star hotel. The property’s subtle parrot and palm tree-themed décor pays homage to its historic ties to the West Indies coffee trade.

Renovated from top to bottom in 2012, the boutique hotel’s 86 rooms now boast new bedding, wood floors and televisions to match the newly refurbished lobby. For an older property, rooms at the St. James are large and five have private balconies. The Caribbean theme weaves throughout with nautical artwork, tropical color schemes and marble bathrooms. All accommodations are equipped with free Wi-Fi, flat screen televisions, coffee makers, fridges and microwaves.

Each morning, guests are served a complimentary, in-room breakfast. The property also has a small pool in the courtyard, a rooftop terrace and is attached to an upscale steakhouse (room service is available).

The hotel is two blocks from the French Quarter and a three-minute walk to the Canal and Magazine streetcar stop. Harrah’s Casino, the Superdome, New Orleans Arena and Ernest N. Morial Convention Center are within a 20-minute walk of the property.

From the press:
  • "The old sugar and coffee trading company pays homage to its Caribbean roots with subtle decorative touches" -- Frommer's
  • "The location is a plus, within walking distance to the French Quarter" --

Enjoyed Most: The hotel is beautiful! I loved that the floors in the room were wood and not carpeted, and the beds were so comfortable. I slept better than I have in a long time. It was a wonderful experience and l can't wait to go back.

Enjoyed Most: There were several things that we enjoyed. First, another guest heard me state that I was on my honeymoon and traded rooms with me. The Desk Clerks, John, Michelle and Ariel were extremely helpful, courteous and attentive. The croissants in the morning were absolutely fabulous.
Other Comments: Housekeeping was accommodating when we were not out of the room. They change the cleaning time.
