Overview
Charming and quaint, Hotel Stendhal is an intimate boutique hotel in Rome's city centre, stretching six storeys high on the bustling Via del Tritone. It's just off the Piazza Barberini, within 10 minutes' walk of the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Palazzo Colonna.
Just as important for art lovers, but perhaps less well known, is the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica at the Palazzo Barberini, which is less than five minutes away on foot. Barberini metro station is just at the end of the street -- handy for a day trip to the Vatican Museums, St Peter's and the Castel Sant'Angelo, four stops away.
There's no restaurant on site, but in the mornings a buffet breakfast is served in the side room just off the lobby, which also doubles as the hotel bar in the evenings. When night falls, order a cocktail and settle down into a leather sofa in the pretty panelled library, surrounded by teal painted walls and heavy tomes. Given the central location, there are plenty of eateries in striking distance.
Rooms are very traditional, with wallpapered walls and classic polished furniture. Most are small, as is often the norm in European cities, but all are equipped with a mini bar, desk and individually controlled air conditioning units (operational in summer months).
The hotel sits on a main road, but double glazed windows minimise noise. If you are worried about being disturbed, request a room to the rear or on one of the higher floors. For the full Roman experience, opt for an Executive room with a private terrace including patio table and chairs. Wi-Fi is free in public areas.
