Overview

Occupying two historic buildings in downtown Portland, the Sentinel strikes a balance between honoring tradition and modern comfort. Try out your typing skills on a working Remington typewriter in the grand lobby, before popping into the on-site Starbucks for a flat white. The hotel’s West Wing was once an Elks Lodge and the East Wing was the Governor Hotel. The former features big windows and original bathroom tiles; the latter has some rooms with rooftop patios.

Though the décor is traditional and stately, from the forest green walls to the leather wingback chairs in guest rooms, the hotel’s recent renovations have brought in some signature local flavor.

An artisanal honey company installed apiaries on the roof, room service includes pints from a popular local ice cream company feature of the moment flavors like coffee and bourbon and in-room coffee is from a small batch roasting company.

Pets are not only welcome, they are eligible for their own room service and owner's may borrow from an extensive library of behavioral tomes.

Guests have free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour business center, room service and a well-equipped fitness center Frommer’s calls it “the best of any hotel in Portland.”

Grab a drink at Jackknife bar or head to dinner at locally loved Jake’s Grill for some of the best steak and seafood in the city, plus an extensive whiskey selection. Guests staying on the top floor of the West Wing get exclusive access to “The Room at the End of the Hall,” an intimate lounge for the use of those seeking a creative refuge during their stay.

The hotel is conveniently close to Pioneer Place Mall and about seven blocks from the Performing Arts Center.

From the press:
  • “The grand lobby, with its coffered plaster ceilings, wouldn’t look out of place in Rome” — Frommer’s
  • “The hotel now reflects a very Portland vibe, with locally sourced textiles, furnishings, and goods” — Fodor’s
