Described by National Geographic as a "storybook realm of hills, stonewalled fields, forests, whitewashed cottages, and clear waters", the Lake District is one of England's most-visited National Parks. Set above the lakeside village of Bowness-on-Windermere, the family-run Hillthwaite House Hotel offers pretty views over the lake and the mountains beyond.

Bowness-on-Windermere Pier is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel; from there you can catch a boat to take in the views. Prices start at £8 for an adult cruise ticket. Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books is now a National Trust property and is 30 minutes' drive away. This year marks 150 years since the birth of the author. The town of Kendal, best known for its mint cake, is a 20-minute drive. For an idyllic mix of limestone and woodland landscape, Whitbarrow Nature Reserve is around 30 minutes' drive.

Cream tea (served 2-4pm) is popular with locals and guests alike. Views are impressive in the restaurant, and you can dine out on the elevated stone terrace or in the conservatory. In cooler months, guests can cosy up in front of the warming fire with a book and a drink -- there are local ales on tap in the bar, as well as a good selection of spirits and wines.

Enjoyed Most: The spa and the food (both breakfast and dinner)
Other Comments: The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had a small problem with our tv in our room where it was not working properly, but the staff addressed and solved the problem straight away. The food at dinner was very nice and the cocktails were great too. We really loved the spa, the pool was a little small but we still enjoyed it. This hotel is really lovely - I would definitely recommend it to all.

Enjoyed Most: The ambience.
Other Comments: The table service was not quite up to scratch on the Friday evening and we waited a while, but it was not a problem. Breakfast on the Saturday was rather cold, but on the Sunday was perfect. It must depend on who is waiting on tables.
