Bovey Castle is set on the extensive grounds of Dartmoor National Park and was used as a military hospital in World War I. Today, it has a well-deserved reputation for its "jaw-dropping splendour" (The Daily Telegraph) and won a VisitEngland Bronze Award in the Hotel of the Year category in 2012. In spite of its grandeur, the property retains an intimate feel, with a combination of traditional country style and art deco furnishings -- think warming fireplaces, cozy sofas and dark-wood paneling.

There are two restaurants: the Edwardian Grill and the relaxed Castle Bistro. The grill is a smart, glamorous option, with an elegant menu -- expect delights such as duck breast with beetroot boulangere, sea bass with a pine nut and olive crumb, and wild mushroom canneloni. Food Magazine says "it’s very accomplished cooking" from chef Andy Storey, and is "highly recommended". After dinner, sample one of the many whiskeys at the traditional Oak Bar, or one of the 150 cocktails on the menu.

The hotel has 66 bedrooms, featuring huge king-size beds, rich fabrics and views of the valley, the first tee or the courtyard. Three-bedroom country lodges featuring kitchens, dining areas and lounges with views overlooking the lakes and gardens are also available and are good options for families or larger groups. Try the unique LEGO room service, where children can order a complimentary set to borrow during their stay.

Other activities available (some extra charges apply) include sloe gin-making and cocktail-making classes, clay-pigeon shooting, horse riding, archery, rifle shooting, golf at the on-site 18-hole course and fly-fishing at the lake. Guests can take advantage of free croquet and tennis, or use the indoor swimming pool and fitness center. The hotel is also home to the U.K.'s flagship SUNDÃRI spa, which was a finalist in The Good Spa Awards 2012, and has a sauna, a steam room, a gym and an indoor pool.

Enjoyed Most: The setting and ambience of the place is brilliant. Staff and service are very good in most areas.
Other Comments: The brassiere restaurant wasn't great. Very loud in there. It was very much just pub grub. Had liver which was not good. I did complain about it and was offered another slice, but didn't want it.
