Expect no cell phone signal, award-winning food and some stunning country walks at this 16th-century inn with far-reaching views of the Berwyn Mountains and Hidden Valley in North Wales. The West Arms really is an escape from it all.

With cosy nooks, original beams and roaring log fires, this family-owned property brims with character and personable staff. There are opportunities for walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, golfing, fishing, canoeing and climbing in the area. Other nearby attractions include Snowdonia National Park, Chirk and Powis castles, Llangollen and Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall.

Head chef Grant Williams once cooked for Prince Charles and has won praise from The Times for his “great, great Welsh cooking” at the AA-Rosette restaurant. Williams' 5-course tasting menu changes daily and uses locally-sourced produce. There is also a bar, serving snacks and an impressive range of real ales, with riverside gardens and more of those hill views.

The rooms are traditionally furnished and spread across the original inn and an annex in a newer part of the building, with views over the Berwyn Mountains or the pretty village. If possible, go for one of the Character rooms, furnished with brass or 4-poster beds, or one of the impressive suites, with free-standing baths, exposed beams and sitting areas.

Pets are welcome for a small fee in all bedrooms and public areas if supervised (with the exception of the formal dining room).

Great atmosphere in this traditional country inn.

We were given a room upgrade to Eagles, a delightful character room with a comfy 6ft wide bed. The inn featured all the character expected in this historic building, open fires., pleasant public bar with two real ales, decent reasonably priced wine list. Food was good, but expensive if you were paying the full menu price. On the travel zoo deal, £89 for 2, for dinner b&b excellent value.

Being able to relax there and good food.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room and bathroom were clean and nicely furnished but the toilet was noisy and awkward to flush and there was no shower over the bath - just a wand and I do enjoy my shower. Also the television did not work and had to be replaced for the second night. The hotel is in a beautiful setting.

This was a nice and cosy hotel with lots of history and character. Room was very comfortable. Staff were nice and helpful. Restaurant food and service were excellent.

This hotel is a little too isolated for our liking. If the weather is bad, you are rather stuck in the wilds. Be aware that the price for a glass of wine is well over the odds at this establishment. We made our displeasure known when we received our drinks bill.
