The 4-star Rubens at the Palace boasts a unique location -- one of its nearest neighbors is Buckingham Palace -- and offers views over the Royal Mews.

Built in the 1800s to accommodate debutantes attending royal parties, the property is walking distance to the Royal Parks, Victoria Station and Westminster -- and has garnered quite the reputation for its delightful staff and living wall, home to 10,000 plants.

Commonly for a historical property, some of the rooms are on the smaller side, but all are quiet and charming. The décor is traditional -- cozy beds, elegant drapes, antiques and original art (including portraits of Henry VIII).

Families are well cared for, with interconnecting rooms, pull-out sofa beds in the more spacious Executive King Rooms, treats at turndown and even a 'Director of Fun'. Pets are also welcome (charges apply).

The Library Restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for its modern British fare, notably its Inverawe Scottish and Burren Irish Smoked Salmon (carved at the table), Gressingham duck breast with tarragon-stuffed mushrooms and the lauded honeycomb ice cream.

After dinner, retire to the Cavalry Bar for a cocktail. The addition of the hotel’s 69-foot-high Living Wall in 2013 has inspired a range of garden-themed drinks, featuring Bloom gin, elderflower and edible flowers.

There is no on-site gym, but free passes to the nearby LA Fitness are available, and Rubens also has a sports buddies program, where staff team up with guests to enjoy any number of sports.

  • "It’s the sort of hotel that must reassure visitors that Britain can still do things well when it puts its mind to it" -- The Daily Mail

Enjoyed Most: The whole thing really, we arrived early and as it was my better halfs special birthday we got an upgrade, but not any upgrade, we was given a room in the Royal suite. We was made to feel really special
Other Comments: From walking into the foyer to when we left, the whole time we was there nothing was too much trouble, the staff throughout the hotel were very friendly.

Enjoyed Most: The upgrade to the Sandringham Suite. Beautiful big room with a huge bed and a nice view of the Mews. The decor of the hotel was immaculate - hardly a scuff mark anywhere.
Other Comments: The most wonderfully cheerful and helpful staff we've ever encountered. The ambience of the Library Restaurant and the quality of the food were excellent. The only downside was the drinks prices which were painfully high.

Enjoyed Most: Good location for a tourist visiting London, close to Buckingham Palace, St. James's Park, The Mall (walking area) and Victoria Station.
Other Comments: Full English Breakfast was outstanding -- tons of options. A great way to start a busy day. Early check-in and late checkout (member extras) were very nice to have. Rooms that face the street can be a bit noisy, but if you shut the bathroom door it helps -- as that window isn't double-paned, but the room window is. Smallish rooms -- but very adequate for 2 people staying together.
