The Montague on the Gardens is a stone’s throw from the best London has to offer -- next door to the British Museum with Oxford Street and the West End within walking distance -- but far enough away from the hordes of tourists found in central London.

Set in pretty Bloomsbury, the property is family-friendly with well-thought-out, quiet rooms. Some are quite small, which is typical for such a historical building, but many have lovely garden views. Bottled mineral water, Internet TVs, free Wi-Fi, DVD and CD players are standard, with a library of films and music from which to choose.

Suites offer more space, evening canapés and king size beds. Children won't get bored with loaner board games, toys and game consoles, and they also get kids’ slippers and bathrobes in the bathroom.

The award-winning (AA-Rosette) Blue Door Bistro restaurant serves upscale classics, such as seared sea trout with crushed new potatoes, prawn stroganoff, and a Wagyu beef burger with truffle and Parmesan chips. After dinner, retire to the Cigar Terrace overlooking the gardens, which is reserved for cigar smokers from 5pm onwards in the winter (10pm during the summer).

The real showstopper, however, is the Garden Grill, serving grilled meat, barbecue dishes and Pimm’s cocktails on the secluded terrace in the summer. In the winter, the space is transformed into a themed ski lodge, serving cheese and chocolate fondue, mulled wine and mugs of hot chocolate.

The staff and service at The Montague is wonderful. Everyone takes the time and effort to make certain your stay is the best it can be.

Though the rooms tend to be “compact” and amply filled with furniture, they are comfortable and make one feel like a guest in a beautiful English manor house. The staff is superb and he location excellent, as it is convenient to Convent Garden, Soho, Shaftesbury Avenue and Bloomsbury, as well as the Russell Square & Holborn underground and Euston, Kings Cross & St. Pancras rail stations.

Upon check in the staff were unaware of the travelzoo deal which resulted in us having to explain what the extras were. This also resulted in a massive confusion over the late check out and a 45 minute wait for the champagne arriving to our room. Obviously I was looking forward to arriving to the champagne in the room but instead we first had to make multiple phone calls until the general manager finally resolved it. Aside from that, breakfast was great but very noisy/creaky floorboards in the room above us all evening.

Beautiful hotel & excellent room and staff, nothing was too much trouble. We had drinks in the Leopard bar and a lovely meal outside on the terrace. The food was delicious and not over poncy and good value. The breakfast the next day was great with plenty of choice.
