Overview

Named "the city’s grandest hotel" by Travel + Leisure, The Cincinnatian was once the city’s tallest building when it was designed in 1882. Today, it still draws the crowds with a well-respected restaurant, comfortable rooms and an excellent address in downtown Cincinnati, just across the Ohio River (and Kentucky state line) from the Newport Aquarium, and the shops, restaurants and entertainment at Newport on the Levee.

The hotel offers a wide range of rooms types for travelers, families and couples looking for a weekend retreat. Windows can face the atrium or feature city views, and there are a variety of bedding options including queen beds, king rooms and suites with double beds. Families can request connecting rooms with two queen beds or pull-out couches; select rooms feature private balconies or whirlpool tubs.

The hotel is right in the center of the city's art scene, one block from the Zaha Hadid-designed Contemporary Arts Center and a 15-minute walk from the noteworthy Taft Museum (free on Wednesdays). The location is also great for sports fans -- the Cincinnati Bengals’ home ground, Paul Brown Stadium and the Reds’ Great American Ballpark are each a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Right around the corner is Fountain Square, which has an ice skating rink in colder months.

The hotel’s main restaurant, The Palace, is "one of the top tables in town," according to Forbes. There’s soft lighting, cozy booths, original art by the great-grandson of Pissarro and a German- and French-influenced menu. For less formal meals try the Cricket Lounge, set in the eight-story atrium, where you can feast on casual fare accompanied by live jazz on the weekends.

From the press:
  • "It's not the largest hotel in Cincinnati, but it is the best" -- Fodor's

Very small room. No coffee in room. Repetitive noise throughout our stay, maybe the elevator?
