On what feels like the edge of the world, the 4-star Pousada de Sagres hotel has panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beach below. It was here in Sagres (Europe's southwest point) that many of Portugal's explorers historically left to find undiscovered shores. Today, their legacy is still felt -- the stone fort dates back to the 14th century and the Cape St Vincent lighthouse still shines out to sea.
The cliff location means it can get windy here, but there's a beach with good surfing, diving and kite-surfing opportunities, 10 minutes' walk away. It's also a good spot to pick up a boat tour to explore the coast or spot dolphins in the bay (depending on the season).
Back at the hotel, the swimming pool has more of those views and sun beds to enjoy the sunshine. The restaurant can be on the expensive side but serves well-finished Portuguese cuisine. If you’d rather explore further afield, Sagres town is a 10-minute walk and has lots of restaurants to try.
The bedrooms have air conditioning, balconies and free Wi-Fi, plus you'll get fresh fruit on arrival. It's worth upgrading to a Superior Sea View room if available. In-room massages can be organised and there are bikes to borrow (fees apply).
