Nestled in the Hudson Valley within an hour's commute of Manhattan, the 26-acre Tarrytown House Estate & Conference Center offers an old-world escape and "lost in time mood" (Gayot) for visiting city dwellers.

Opt for contemporary accommodations in the estate's main inn or choose from one of the 10 rooms in the elegant King Mansion, decked out in rich, Georgian-era decor reminiscent of the mansion's past 19th century furnishings.

With a celebrated history as the nation's first conference center dating back to the mid-1800s, Tarrytown House Estate prides itself as not only a leisure facility, but also an opportune place for business. Copious additional on-site amenities include the estate's two pools (a family-friendly indoor pool open year-round and a seasonal outdoor 21+ adults-only pool), along with a fitness center, treatment rooms for spa services and tennis, volleyball and basketball courts.

Dining on site is available at the estate's adult-focused Cellar 49 restaurant, offering a cozy ambiance and upscale tavern fare, specialty wines and craft beer.

Two historic estates are also worth a visit sit within a 15-minute stroll of the property. Tour Lyndhurst masion for a peak into an estate "widely considered the premier Gothic Revival home in the United States" (Fodor's) or visit Washington Irving's eclectic Sunnyside estate, built in 1835 by America's first internationally known author and literary mastermind of works like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

Though of all of the grand manor houses in this area, "none compares to Kykuit" (Frommer's), which is less than a 10-minute drive away. This grand estate, which was once the Rockefeller family's private holiday home, is now a six-story museum surrounded by manicured sculpture gardens and filled with "Nelson Rockefeller's incredible collection of 20th-century modern art" (Frommer's).

Tarrytown and its charming boutiques, antique shops, art galleries and restaurants are also within a 10-minute drive. Lauded by Forbes Magazine as one of the Top 10 Prettiest Towns in America, Tarrytown boasts "a bustling downtown with a rich artistic history" (Fodor's).

Travelzoo Tip: If traveling from New York City, save on Metro North tickets to Tarrytown station. Deal Experts recommend a visit to the nearby Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a 80-acre farm and upscale restaurant offering "one of the best dining experiences in America" (GQ magazine).

Lovely grounds, very nice, old fashioned room.

It was misleading: There were no views of the River. The amenities were disappointing for a $200 room, and little effort by staff to accommodate. Extras were exorbitant, for instance, room service had a $7 delivery fee PLUS an 18% "service charge" on an already high end menu. I don't mind tipping a room service waiter, but not at 18%. Not for us, but for others, handicap access seemed limited. Mid week (in high season) few extras were available, like pool bar. All in all, overcharge for not enough.

They overbooked the hotel. SERIOUSLY?! So they wanted to rebook us for a Courtyard Marriott. SERIOUSLY AGAIN?! I mean: I work in tourism, travel a lot, but this has NEVER happened to me and I think it UNACCEPTABLE!! Glad that you guys at least called us for a headsup - would have been great to know before 7pm though...

The grounds are beautiful. The terrace with fire pit and adirondack chairs was a nice way to spend the evening. We especially enjoyed the tennis, basketball, and racquetball courts. The on-site restaurant was delicious, and everything we ordered was amazing. Even the indoor pool was the perfect temperature. We rarely return to the same hotel twice, but we'll certainly make an exception for this place.

The hotel was hosting a wedding and couples retreat on the same weekend as our stay, but it didn't limit our use of the grounds and facilities at all. We were impressed that the hotel could offer different functions while giving all guests the maximum enjoyable experience.

Stayed in the deluxe King Mansion rooms. Not really worth the extra. AC extremely load and inefficient. Stairs were a problem for my guest. Promo leads you to believe you are getting a porch and a river view.
