Set in 35 acres of pretty gardens overlooking Lake Massawippi, the AAA 4-Diamond Manoir Hovey is a quiet retreat made for romantic getaways. The property began life in the 19th century, modeled after President Washington’s summer mansion, Mount Vernon, and is now an intimate Relais & Chateaux resort with only 36 rooms, a first-rate restaurant and the atmosphere of a private estate. Staff are welcoming and friendly and are known for remembering guests’ names.
Populated by British loyalists at the end of the 1700s, the Eastern Townships still feel "more English than England," notes the Guardian, despite being only a 90-minute drive from bustling Montreal. This is rolling farm country, complete with clapboard churches and wooded slopes, and the pretty little town of North Hatley fits right in, complete with its bakery, antique shops and century-old architecture.
Beyond romantics, epicures come from across the country to try the restaurant's award-winning Quebecois cuisine. The more relaxed option is a cozy pub, complete with lakeside terrace. There’s an on-site gym, and a range of activities to try, from cycling, kayaking, tennis and swimming in the summer to snowshoeing and skating in the winter.
Rooms are all unique -- the country-style rooms are furnished with antique beds, floral prints and checked fabrics, the deluxe rooms are more modern with sleek furniture and glass-topped tables. Many come with whirlpool baths and some have fireplaces. All rooms are equipped with Nespresso coffee machines, bathrobes, Frette towels, L'Occitane bath products and flat screen TV's. Rooms also come with complimentary Wi-Fi.
