Dating back as far as the 13th century, Homewood Park Hotel & Spa is a rural retreat set in 10 acres of mature parklands, just outside the historic city of Bath. Its well-tended gardens were recognised with a Bath in Bloom award in 2012 and, according to Harper's Bazaar, guests can expect "quintessential Englishness", with croquet on the lawn and cut flowers from the garden in every room.

This 4-star Georgian property offers uninterrupted views of the beautiful Limpley Stoke valley and original features, including exposed wooden floors, antique paintings and roaring log fires. The rooms are well-sized with freestanding baths, and many have valley or garden views. Upgrade to the biggest rooms in the house -- the Master Suites – for a separate sitting area and outside terrace.

The on-site spa is surrounded by a walled garden with facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and heated outdoor swimming pool. There is an extensive spa menu and a champagne nail bar.

The 2-AA-Rosette fine-dining Tides Restaurant serves "exquisite" dishes, says The Guardian. The menu uses local seasonal ingredients in dishes such as breast of wood pigeon with butternut squash spelt risotto; pork loin with crispy belly, granny apple and spinach; and lemon polenta cake with basil jelly, crisp meringue and lemon curd. There's also a 6-course tasting menu for the foodie diner.

The hotel is six miles from the historic city of Bath, where there are the Roman Baths, the modern Thermae Bath Spa, the Jane Austen Centre and Bath Abbey to explore. Stonehenge, Longleat Safari Park and the city of Bristol are all a short drive away.

Enjoyed Most: The location
Other Comments: Perturbed at Reception when booking in to be asked for my pin number, as had already given my card details. I was told they would hold £100 pounds from the card against any spend or 'doing a runner' as she put it. On leaving they said they would put the £100 back on the card, I will be checking my next statement.

Enjoyed Most: The room we were in was amazing! Lovely food and staff were very friendly and helpful.
Vicky Aug 17, 2014 Launceston , United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: Our room had lovely views and on the quiet side of hotel (away from A36). It was well appointed and roomy. Bed comfortable and roomy. Breakfast very good and staff attentive to your needs. Didn't use spa so cannot comment. Didn't have dinner likewise.
Other Comments: Only gripe is that car park is in need of urgent repairs. There are some very large potholes which are almost certainly likely to damage a customers vehicle. Chest of drawers in room looked antique but in fact were poor quality, shabby and difficult to use - we chose not to use them.

Enjoyed Most: Friendly staff in a beautiful hotel and great surroundings. A very nice area of the country.
Kathy Quilter Aug 06, 2014 Southampton, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: The spa was delightful and in really good condition.
Other Comments: For an expensive, 4* hotel, the room was slightly disappointing in that there were the small details missing. For example, there was no mini bar and in the bathroom, guests were not even provided with face cloths or glasses/ cups for teeth cleaning. At breakfast things seemed a little disorganised, they ran out of brown bread within half an hour of breakfast beginning and you had to ask for juice jugs to be refilled. They also forgot our cooked breakfast request. The hotel itself is beautiful but the standards are a little more akin to a 3 star hotel.
