Highbullen Country House Hotel is an Arts and Crafts-style property, set in a 125-acre estate overlooking Exmoor's verdant valleys. The property was named Large Hotel of the Year and won the bronze Taste of Devon accolade at the 2014 Devon Tourism Awards.

The hotel, positioned halfway between Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, is in a great location, is just an hour's drive from Exeter on Junction 30 of the M5. The property is a 40-minute drive from Westward Ho! beach, a "magnificent swathe of sand" (Rough Guides), and just under an hour's drive from Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe -- three of North Devon's top surfing beaches. Torquay and Paignton on the English Riviera are an hour and a half away by car.

The hotel has a fine-dining restaurant, which is open every evening for locally sourced meals accompanied by panoramic views of the Devon hills. In the mornings, guests can feast on a continental buffet spread, and there is also the option of a cooked breakfast. More casual meals, including burgers, pies, pizzas and pasta, are available in the Cellars restaurant and bar, or grab a sandwich at the Club Bar.

There is an 18-hole golf course in the grounds, which has "excellent greens" and a number of "outstanding holes" (The AA). Hotel guests can play at the reduced price of £10 per person, and buggies and clubs are available to hire. Other activities include tennis, fishing and shooting. There are also two croquet lawns, a fully equipped gym, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools on site.

Standard Rooms are cosy and have free Wi-Fi. Deluxe Rooms are more spacious, and Superior Rooms are larger still. Bedrooms were refurbished in 2013 and are in the main manor house or in the neighbouring estate buildings, with views of the lawns. Superior Rooms in the Forrester's Rest are more secluded and overlook Exmoor. These rooms can accommodate dogs -- quilted beds and treats are laid on, and kennel accommodation, dog walking and grooming can be arranged.

Enjoyed Most: The food was tremendously good - fine dinning and in the cellar restaurant. We stayed in the main house which has a most welcoming feel about it - the staff were particularly helpful and well informed. The facilities were adequate with a good choice of activities to occupy whatever the weather. I would highly recommend Highbullen and hope to return 2017.

Enjoyed Most: A lovely relaxing hotel in stunning surroundings - once you've mastered the journey and narrow lanes leading to the hotel
Lynne Sep 07, 2016 East Barnet, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: Despite the poor service, the breakfasts were reasonably good, and the Golf Course is in good condition.
Other Comments: Poor service in both restaurants and misleading information on price lists for evening meals in the Devon View restaurant which resulted in us being overcharged for a a meal of mediocre quality. The food generally in the restaurants was poor. Also, the hotel is reached by small narrow roads which makes access tricky. On paying the bill the hotel staff initially failed to take account of the 50 pound deposit we had paid to Travelzoo.
